Actually, I just thought of a way to completely salvage this episode.

Take away a lot of the filler parts of the episode, remove all the random appearances by one-shot ponies. Have the delegation fall apart in the MIDDLE, not the end. The second half of the episode would have Twilight wake up to find the delegation on the brink of chaos because Spike wasn't doing his job right (both with the pampering and the mismanagement). So what's a guy to do? With Twilight's tutelage, he redeems himself by helping Twilight in a constructive way: he sends messages to any pony that was wronged in some way, maybe even helping personally with disputes. Bonus points for doing this via Owloysius, who Spike now trusts and respects. Things are sorted out, Spike is redeemed, and the episode could end with the modified Aesop of having trust and respect be earned, as it was with Twilight herself, instead of it being granted just because he's a second to a princess.

Yeah, even with all said and done, I don't think she thinks of Spike as inferior to her. Still, like I said, they both need major development, especially now more than ever after this episode. Something's missing.

That's another thing, too, sort of related to my first point in my response to DeviousDiamond. They need to reiron out Twilight and Spike's bond. Is it servitude? Is it familial (sister/brother, mother/son)? Twilight has had so little focus since Season 3 that there's this giant grey hole, and future Spike episodes need to fill it up at some point lest people completely abandon Spike as a character.

But what's Spike's role? His whole "assistant" schtick is in complete disarray because now Twilight has a role and responsibilities FAR beyond the capabilities of a baby dragon; why Cadence ever believed that Spike would be able to subdue the demands of an entire delegation (or, for a more realistic interpretation, a convention) is flabbergasting. Could they not delay the delegation one more day? Could they not provide earplugs? What did Twilight (have to) do that required her to be up for three days straight? What did the other princesses do in the interim? WHY IS SPIKE'S JOB PLAN A?

Furthermore the Aesop is completely flawed; we see Spike taking advantage of his position to get cupcakes and massages and whatnot. Apparently Twilight wasn't actually bothered while he was pampering himself and the situation only came to a head BECAUSE he was trying to do what Cadence told him (keep things quiet for Twilight). So it would have been better if he did the WRONG thing.

Funny... I groaned throughout a lot of it. A friend of mine quit halfway through the episode.

It was bad.

It's definitely partly a dearth of advertising for the show, but it is also because it was a Spike episode, with a synopsis that no one could really care about.

Quality of an episode doesn't affect Nielsen ratings (unless it counts only those that tuned in for the full half hour, which is possible), but there's also no denying it was a really bad episode, where Spike is once again treated as a fool because of things largely out of his control and partly due to the incompetence of the princesses. Furthermore we've had a real lack of direction or even substance to this season, devoting so little to a concrete story that it's difficult to get people excited for new episodes in the first place. At this point a good chunk of the fandom probably aren't bothering to watch episodes, from recording or live, unless people tell them it's worth it. With this one it wouldn't have been.
