Allow me to share some insight into life as a teacher behind the scenes. My wife's job will depend on student test scores. The students she teaches will be given a test geared towards students who are reading at a 6th grade level (she teaches 6th grade). Trouble is, she was given a class of students that read at a 3rd grade level! Not even the best teacher can bring reading levels up by 3 grades in one semester. Maybe with students who want to learn. They don't. Maybe with students who respect teachers. They don't. Why should they? A good portion of them come from parents of Illegal immigrants who don't respect the laws of this country and expect everything to be given to them. Why should their children expect anything else? The students are not held accountable for their actions. They go on to the next grade level no matter what their test scores are. They don't care. LAUSD is simply a publicly financed baby sitting service. The more butts in the chair, the more matching federal funds. On top of this teachers can expect no help from administrators of which there are too many and do too little. I'll end my rant with a story of what happened to my wife once in class. She sees 2 boys talking in the back of class. One is opening his jacket to show something to the other. My wife thinks the boy has is Ipod AGAIN and goes to take it off him AGAIN. Reaching into his jacket and grabs his.....Whoa, what's this? A gun! Principle is called, boy removed. Move on to 3 days later.................... Boy is back in class. (turned out to be a modified BB gun!) Principle comes to her class to tell her that she should not have taken the gun from the boy because it embarrassed him in front of the class! He says this to her IN FRONT OF THE CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At this point one might be tempted to say it's time to quit LAUSD. Easier said than done, pride does not pay the bills folks. This crap is happening every day and the teachers who are in the trenches are being held accountable for things they have no control over. My wife is burnt out and I'm sitting at home typing on a computer in the middle of the day without a job. It doesn't get any better than this eh?
