Collide Magazine Blog : How Does Your Church Do Announcements?

We don't do "announcements"--but we do have a "Community Life" portion in the service where we talk about what's going on in the community. This includes celebrations, some answers to prayer, and yes, "annoucements." We cast them as community needs or opportunities rather than as reminders. We have about four people who are good at keeping it snappy, and we rotate the responsibility.

Maurilio Amorim : Today's Communicator Must also be a Sociologist

Two thoughts on this post: First, I have wondered for some time if it is possible to create a message that communicates to everyone. Your insight makes me more doubtful that this can be done. However, I have an inkling that some actions can communicate to everyone (the crucifixion, for example), and action is a form of communication. Second, I think the day may be coming when it will be impossible to sell content. Communicators can only sell their audience (through advertising) or themselves (via speaking fees, salary, etc.). Are we returning to the days of free TV--now applied to all media?

Maurilio Amorim : Communicators: Embrace Social Media or Quit

No, you are not being unreasonable. I was not an early adopter of Twitter (thought it was stupid), but I cannot imagine pastoring now without communicating through Facebook, blog posts, e-newsletters, text messaging, and, yes, Twitter. This is how many (most?) of my people talk to each other. I want to lead the conversation, not be left out of it.

Maurilio Amorim : To Iron or Not to Iron? The Rise of the Wrinkled Shirt

Untucked is challenging enough for me. Not sure I'm ready for rumpled. Though I do agree that some of these shirts look better slightly "distressed."

Maurilio Amorim : You Are Now a Global Brand. Yes, You.

As an editor, I constantly reminded authors that the world was bigger than North America. Now as a blogger, I have to remind myself that continual references to U.S. culture, politics, etc., make my writing less accessible. It's hard to think big.

Maurilio Amorim : This is How Traditional Retail is Going to Survive

There is definitely no substitute for great customer service (including product knowledge). A sales agent who is part diagnostician makes for a great sale. A generous return/exchange policy makes for a loyal customer. I keep wondering how to apply these principles to the church. Do I anticipate the needs of the people who walk into our church? Or do I/we try to shove everyone toward our special of the day? This is harder to do than it looks.

Maurilio Amorim : Taking Your Brand to the Next Level

Awesome insight, Maurilio. These things are often easy to identify in others but difficult to asses in ourselves or our ministries. I would love to see you write about tools for doing this type of self-assessment--that is, finding out what people do expect when they encounter a ministry or personal brand (blog, etc.).

Maurilio Amorim : Men’s Fashion Trends for 2011

I was never a big fan of the skinny tie, though I do like the square-bottom tie. i think it's the best casual (no-jacket) look, when it's "in." The bold colors are nice to see, but I doubt they'll last long. And linen? Ugh. So hard to wear.
