Surely you mean husband or wife, my definition of a partner alludes to business. Lovers and mistresses are to my knowledge, do not come under the divorce act.

Lindsay, Cambridge has another ridiculous offer for undergraduate males though it may also be available to female intake as well. A doctorate in shaving! I am waiting for a university to offer a degree in the dying art of sticking a stamp on an envelope and hand writing. Some serious reconstruction of higher education is long overdue.

Ah, you have brought back memories of a great cricket reporter and an unpretentious expert on wine. What a lovely man he was. R.I.P

An excellent article and some good comments here. I will only add my pennyworth in reference as to the appalling state our politicized universities have become! The point Paul Goodman made on Lego links to my nearest University, Cambridge. A couple of years ago they introduced a degree in, yes you have guest it, Lego! Are the company funding it? Any six year old must surely automatically qualify for a first. There are a few brave souls who raise their heads above the dross to counter balance the left speak but in such a biased atmosphere are drowned out.

I can remember when it was illegal to hold demonstrations in the airier of the Palace of Westminster, such demonstrations were limited to Trafalgar Square or Hyde Park and such demonstrations had to seek permission from the appropriate authorities. It is time to reinstate this.

Now, now, you are being greedy and encouraging laziness. Activity improves mental health, you have less time to dwell on things that affect your mental well being.

Ah, the injustice of our tax laws. Worse still is Ken Clarks imposition of making us pay six months in advance on income not received. A complete overhaul of the taxing system is well overdue.

David, I have always thought that dogs are more intelligent than we give them credit for. I love this account of yours, an extra bone or so to dogs would be in order.

As usual Tony your observations are clear and for my part sensible. As to the theme of Paul Goodman's column, there is much to be said for a break in the working week where we can rest and enjoy the simple things of life and one family. I have got into the habit of switching of my cell phone no only for that day but limiting it on a daily basis. The relief from this intrusion on my privacy is remarkably invigorating.

There are six days in a week to shop, one day is not to much to ask that we can break of from the routine of those six.

you are correct, 'you cannot have your cake and eat it.' If you are self employed you are a business, therefor as a self employed business you should ' provide all equipment, your own training and liability insurance - all that without any worker rights.' Because you are self employed. If your friends have any initiative I hope they find ways of working together so that they can meet the challenges and prosper post Covid19. As to the House of Lords report, dried up prune's tend not to produce much juice worth having.

As some one who has been self employed nearly all my life I would point out to you that Covid19 is the culprit and not the government. We self employed will recover apart from some service industries who due to changes in working patterns may find that their business is no longer required. If they have any nous they will adapt to the circumstances. As for me, I am optimistic about the future and so is my son-in-law who is preparing to open his barbers shop with bookings already in place. The next GE is some time away by then Great Britain will have really and truly deserved its name.
