I am not sure what the law is up here, but like I said earlier I used to work in Georgia and one unit was dispatched to a MVA and they were bringing a trauma patient in to us, when they were crossing the intersection (their light was red, but everyone who had common sense stopped to let them through) and a person came through the intersection and t-boned the ambulance. The driver of the car was not ticketed or fined, the Medic who was driving the ambulance was cited with running a red light. To make matters worse, the patient coded while they were waiting on another ambulance to come get him. Luckily, he was stabalized and is doing great now. My thing is.. and maybe it's just me... If it's the law to STOP and GET OUT OF THE WAY for ambulances, why in the heck was the medic ticketed? It's just stupid. He was trying to get to the hospital obviously. Doesn't make any sense to me. I am not an EMT, but I have worked in the medical field for the past 5 years. I know when I worked in the ER, there were plenty of times Medics and EMT's had to leave just to go on another call. I think we timed it one night and ONE unit brought in 16 patients in just an 8 hour shift. (Not here in Cedar Rapids, this was another state) I worked at a trauma center for 15 counties so it wasn't just a chest pain or a back pain they brought in. These were shooting victims, MVA's and such. I applaud all EMT's and Medics.It takes dedication :) Unless people know first hand, I think they need to keep their criticism to theirself. There are lots of people that don't need to be driving. I've learned when dealing with semi's.. give a little respect to get respect. If they are trying to merge.. flash your lights and let them over don't speed up to try and pass them. That just makes them mad. And they'll more than likely run you off the road or tailgate you. And if you are wanting to merge onto the interstate.. USE YOUR BLINKER... that goes a LONG way. If you let them know you want over, they will let you. My ex is a semi driver and you'd be surprised at the crazy stuff people do. A few months ago he was following me in his rig to Tennessee and I swear from Cedar Rapids to Nashville about 50 people cut him off. It was scary watching him almost get hit. He actually rode the median for about 100 feet cause a girl that was on her phone wasn't paying attention and drifted into our lane. She almost took out his rig and my jeep. And then she wanted to get mad when he honked his horn and I flipped her off. It's not just rig drivers people. It's everyone. Stay off your phones and pay attention to what's going on around you. Alot of lives can be saved if you just pay attention.
