I think there is a noble cause what the guy in the video with the poor immigrant’s without a job. If I had the power to help them I would do it too. But my help would not last all the immigrants life. Although they do not have jobs I think they should look deeper into other places. I am not an illegal immigrant but I came from a different country, and I have friends who are illegal and have nothing more than themselves and a poor place to live, but in some way I think they decided to come here to work so before they came here they must have known the work situation in the country.
I would like to ask those who say that would turn away, what about if they were the ones put into that situation. Some might say that they would not come here to live like that, but what about if it was worst in your hometown? It is hard to understand a person’s position or situation when you have never experienced it but to imagine yourself in their shoes is not that hard.
I believe that the Colombian guy made a commitment to these people, but what about when he is not there anymore. I personally think that besides giving them food he should also encourage them to find a job or if somehow he has free time he should find contacts to help out these people. If I would help somebody giving them food I will also try to get him a job or something he can establish himself on. Like Jesus said in the bible, which is not only a phrase from the bible but a truth, “Do not only give them the fish, teach them how to fish”.
The population In United States is growing really fast and maybe because of illegal immigrants, but they are people too and like Sam described an American is an old definition of illegal immigrants, who came and even if they made the country “better” they took away a land which they weren’t landlords of. For the immigration laws of they want to stop illegal immigration there are ways, but the ones who are already here what about them? I am an idealist but I think that people need to learn to find jobs. I know that we still live in recession right now, but if we can help somebody it would be a good thing, to us and to others as well.

I personally think that the story is said the way we interpret it or the ways we want hear it. I don’t think there is a lot that comes from white or colored people but I know that sometimes one takes it personally if says a white guy talks about white guys being bad or an African American being discriminated from white guys. The story changed down the line and became more vague as well because each student could only remember specific parts of it. It is fair to say that the white individuals "sugar-coated" it, but it must also be taken into consideration that the story was losing many of its details down the line as well. The white individuals were in between and towards the end, they could not possibly remember or clearly tell every detail when those details were not passed down the line to them previously in the conversation. In fact, maybe the lack of detail made it seem as if the white individuals were "changed For the most part, I saw them tell bits and pieces of the story, but then jump back to sections which they had forgotten. Story parts became out of order and one might see this as skipping around to avoid the awkward sections which may have appeared as "changed". It can definitely go both ways. To be honest, I did not think that the white students "changed" anything until I had to sit and think of ways they might have after watching this question response video.
I also think that there wasn’t a specific racist activity because the students just told the story the way it was presented to them. But one thing I did notice the story was told differently because people have a tendency to try not to make them or people like them look bad. I agree with the statement that there was that as the story was retold to each person, there was a hesitance to tell it again because they were afraid to get the story around. But in reality, there was no “right” story; each person could have spun it in their own way because every story comes from prior knowledge.
In conclusion, the story told by everybody to each other was changed each time they would tell somebody else. There is ways people tell the next person the way they want to put it. Talk about your own race sometimes is hard if it comes to something embarrassing or something bad, so we tend to make changes in the words by not saying the race when its convenient for the story we tell.

The class brought up some good points about terrorism like the way we generalized people just because we see from our own point of view. I was not here in 9/11 but I learned about it when came to high school here. I always thought about terrorist being the bad guys that kill people for no reason. But after the soc 119 class I started to understand that there is a reason for everything we do or judge (at least about race, and now terrorism). I do not justify terrorism and much less give the thumbs up to it.
Today’s class just made me realize that there is a way to see things from another point of view. We see the Taliban as a bad group and yes they are bad people, because they do not take their sentiment only towards Americans, they take it to their own people as well and that is just not right. I am not only talking about the Taliban, I also want talk about the Americans and their way to teach the kids about militia. I could not believe that some military places teach kids about the militia and to fight in name of God. If people in USA are critiquing people in the Middle East that means that they are not aware of how alike we can be.
When we see somebody with a tunic, we assume that they are bombers or something, and if we go there they will see us the same way, they will assume that we are bad people as well. The video about America militia harming Iraqi civilians, makes me upset, and of course if I was them I will develop resentment against them. I have too many friends that have some racism attitude against the people in the Middle East, no matter if they are Muslim or other religion, I would to have them heard the lecture.
There is also terrorism in other countries, which we did not cover, but like for example in my country and border countries there are other terrorist groups, which just want to make their point across by murdering people because they do not believe that the government would listen to them, so they kidnap and murder people to show their presence and their resentment towards the government.
Terrorism, to me, seems like an excuse to kill people just because they are being attack, Is not attack back. Terrorism is instead killing people that does not have a thing to do with the problem, but just because they belong to the place being attacked means that they are the target too.
To me terrorism seems like a way scare a country. If the Taliban attacked USA them, because USA wants control, they are going to attack back, but they are also include civilians. Now there is a battle, and there is the resentment created from the America’s army to the Iraqi people, which might lead to another fight.

It really did not, it actually opened they eyes of me and my boyfriend. There were parts that I completely agreed with Laurie and there were parts that did not apply to me or my boyfriend. There were also facts that did we already knew. It was mostly fun. Sometimes I take my boyfriend to class and there are times I don’t. I didn’t ask him to come that day but he decided to invite himself. When Laurie and Sam started to talk about their experience I thought to myself this is gonna be fun is a way. My boyfriend started to listen to Laurie and he started to nod his head like in an agreement with her. Since we were holding hands, every time Laurie or Sam would say something we do not do he or I would hold the hand harder and stare at each other, like they would have been talking to us only. I completely agree that the world spins around what men like, not what we women like. I live in front of the bus stop in Curtin second floor and from my floor every Friday and Saturday there are always girls or one girl at least with a mini skirt or a provocative shirt, not enough they are mostly drunk or tipsy. I personally like to be confortable so unless in an extreme case I’ll go provocative. I hereby believe that there is always a reason behind all we do. I also agree that women need more time to get to an orgasm, and that’s something me and my partner talked about so it made me realize that I really do and is not my fault and that I should get one if my boyfriend is getting one too. Since he is not really touchy and he is more like Sam said he is in third base ready to get home, after the lecture he hold my hand and started to hug me more and be more talkative and flirty somehow that lecture changed him a little and I can’t lie I like it.  This class made me think also about that men” don’t loose it” for a long time and women actually do faster than them. I think is understandable why they have a higher rate of cheating ( but is not a really good excuse). It could be also why guys have more partner rates than girls. But what’s wrong with that, we also like to have sex and because one does it with many people is call a whore and a guy that does it the same is not. The world again is proved to be men centered. I would have love to hear a solutions or at least a more direct way that they could open our minds and make us directly see why the needy penis has excuses to be more promiscuous.

15 years ago @ World In Conversation - Has Barak Obama’s pr... · 0 replies · +1 points

I would like to say he did. Although there were racist movements before him, once he got in the seat of president of United States, there were a lot of controversies about his race and ethnicity. The fact that his is black and his last name and name seem to be Middle Eastern, made the people think that he wasn’t American, so therefore people thought that he was a terrorist or not as smart as a white guy. But many people thought he wasn’t going to be chosen because of the way he looked, and we see he was chosen for the smart ideas and concrete solutions for the country.
I am not really into politics but I like to analyze the critics, sometimes people make against other races or their own. It is unbelievable how some people can start to criticize out of nowhere. Like for example if he is black, he is aggressive or of she is blonde she might be dumb or if he is Latino he unclean. These are the assumptions that people make about others just taking for database their own experiences with two or one or even none (just heard about it) other races. This is what happened with Barack Obama, he looks black, his last name is not American, but that doesn’t make him more aggressive or dumber.
After his campaign people in this country and in others started to look more at other races to compare and criticize, because it was a big event that a black person was as some say the first black president in America, the fact that he is multiracial. And common he is not even black, he is multiracial, he definitely has black ancestors but he is not black racially speaking (he is Hawaiian).
Barack Obama made a difference speaking about the racial problems that this country has and the problems minorities and the country in general have, like the health insurance, migrant workers, and other things that came out more enlighten. He brought new ideas and other ways to look at people; I think somehow he brought new opportunities and change. Some people do not like to see a black person where they think a white person should be, just for the color of their skin. I would like to tell all those people to instead of being looking at skin color, why they don’t look at what they do for the country and why do they do it, how smart they are. It is easy to make assumptions but not easy to brake them when you always stick to them. So if you are one of those get out of the bubble get to know more people from other places.

I believe that racial signifiers are everywhere mostly in the media. Racial signifiers are not noticeable ti us until we really start thinking on them. I believe racial signifiers are something we should take in consideration for good and not to become more racist instead racial aware.
For example, this class soc 119 is making me more aware of the things I wasn’t aware before I never consider white people to be the supremacy; I just consider them as people like me but with a different tone of color. And I was a little scared of black people because they have a ghetto accent and I encounter a problem with a black guy in McDonalds, in Philly, who treated me really bad. But I really wasn’t aware of how this might change my way of thinking.
I am from Peru and thought white people most of them were something really nice to look at when I was in my country since there is little of white population back there. But once I came to United States, I started to see the differences pop out really hard. I went to an all-white high school and at the beginning I felt really bad because of my accent but after that I felt bad because of my skin. The last year in high school was a little different because I found that it wasn’t my color of skin what was the problem, it was in fact the things in common I shared with them. I didn’t have much to talk about because all my culture and beliefs and knowledge were based on my experiences back in Peru.
But another thing turned my way of looking at this race magnifier; it was my transition here and the Soc 119 class. I didn’t care who seat next to me, all I cared about was that I was seated but once the racial concepts were applied I felt a little uncomfortable seating close to a white guy or girl, although not as much I think they felt with me.
A racial magnifier does not have the same outcome in everybody; some people understand it in different ways. I think some people become more racial aware and like it because they want to learn about others and there is other people who take this magnifier in a way that they become more racist against people of color or against whit e people.
As I grew up in two different places here and back in my hometown I learned that there are differences but I still think im developing the idea that we are not equal, since I am an idealist I think we all are equal but this class and my experiences opened my eyes and the reality is other.

Like I was saying in my conversation group, I think in todays society we are more racist against something like religion combined with resentment. There is a lot of resentment against people from the middle from what happened in 9/11. But I really do not know how it was before the dilemma of 9/11 happened. Middle East people as seen as terrorist and black people are seen as a lower class. In any way we want to see it there is racism in both sides of the party blacks and Muslims.

Somehow, I expected something like that would happen (he made us ate the chocolate and then put a video to make us, really think about it) but I guess I’m not the only who expected something like that; even expecting it, we ate the first chocolate. But I wasn’t expecting as strong statement as you are eating my flesh. Even if I expected it, I felt bad and worst when I saw the scars on the people’s back. I am an idealist and I like peace and love everybody, but I know that’s never going to happen at least not completely and the images in the video just made me feel not guilty but sad of how as humans (who came from the same ancestors, treat each other like that).
In high school I was shown a video about companies like GAP, and Nike that contribute with the work slavery. After this I stopped buying clothes from both of them, but with the time I started to buy again stuff from Nike. Nike is the a really good brand of sports clothes and shoes, they sale their merchandise at high prices and the had working which is send overseas costs them 3 times less from what they charged. The same thing with the great coffee we all like to drink in the morning. Since I lived in Peru Colombia is really close to Peru, in the coffee country (Colombian Coffee) Colombia, I had a friend back in Peru who worked for a coffee plantation and he did not like it. He was paid little and the work conditions were horrible (but at least he was paid, no like the guys in the movie). He was taken to Colombia because somebody offered him a job “a good job” but he found out, the horrible things some “patrones” do to the workers. Some of them get hit.
I have a friend who a year ago took me to this place call 2000 villages, and is a place where you can buy too many fair traded things, although they are somehow expensive, it helps people to alleviate this big slavery work issue. In contrast to Wal-Mart this place promotes the fair trade, but we are a bunch of selfish people who prefer to benefit ourselves without thinking in somebody else. I don’t say I don’t buy at Wal-mart(or other places that don’t seem like helping to promote the fair trade) buy if I had enough money to buy things at 2000 villages I would do it. I saw the chart of the family incomes in class and is amazing to see that there is people who have much more money than I do and I bet they still do not contribute to the fair trade.
