OutsourcedPharma.com, CRO, CMO, Pharmaceutical Drug Development Services : What If Our Generics Strategy Has Been All Wrong

Thank you, Joel. A "quantum shift" is a great way to phrase what's needed. FYI Part 2 of this is now live on our homepage, and final part 3 will be out subsequently ... Louis

OutsourcedPharma.com, CRO, CMO, Pharmaceutical Drug Development Services : How Will New Trade Agreements Impact The Pharma Industry … And Patient Access To Medicines

I'm curious, Dr. Shah, if you are actually anathema to any attempts to reign in IP theft, and unbalanced costs of drugs between the U.S. and the rest of the world. Obviously, with phrasing such as "trade regime unleashed by President Trump," " under pressure from the U.S., it is stripped of language," and the closer: "An industry that saves lives of people will unwittingly provide further fodder to those who wish to tarnish its image," you don't like the current U.S. position or president. Are you thus saying the U.S. should just let the status quo continue ... and that would be good for U.S. patients (and companies)? Again ... just curious about your further thinking here. Thank you. Yes, time to place, if you will, the "quality credibility" and full reliability of global outsourcing squarely on the discussion table. Also, I'm very interested in the social anthropology and organizational culture research ... I will follow up with on that. Thank you again.

Pavan, Apologies for any "incoherence," and completely agreed: This subject requires more attention. That I will give it -- hopefully with increasing clarity. For now, more than making points, what is most important is the bio/pharma industry publicly answering this question: Why do you outsource so much of our drug supply chain to China, where quality, IP, and national concerns abound?

Tom, Thank you for your expert economic analysis, and further background/commentary/sources regarding this complicated societal and international market/business challenge. A lot to unpack, but I'll reply here to one of your direct questions, which I think is really the main kernel of the article: Viewing from the "freedom" lens, I'd say Americans have fought for fair and equitable trade since ... the revolutionary war.

Great questions and comments, Alex. I particularly stayed away from focusing on price in this editorial ... but it has to be a main part of the global dialogue. And that, as you point out, includes consumers/patients here in the U.S., who are always demanding cheaper costing drugs. We've got a systemic challenge within a broken system ... not a good recipe currently.

Life Science Leader : The Drug Pricing Dilemma Pfizer And President Trump

Kudos for writing this blog, Rob. It is the Chinese who long ago “embarked on a trade war” with the U.S. Trump just decided to fight back, whereas past U.S. administrations were satisfied to cede ground year after year. You mention a “shuddering” U.S. stock market. The shudders have been easily shaken off. As of this writing, the three major indices (Dow, S&P 500; NASDAQ) are at or near historic highs. On the other hand, the Chinese markets (and as you mention, currency), are not fairing as well. But here is what is most important to us specifically, and remarkably still unexplored publically: A major nexus between Trump’s “America First” agenda and the pharma industry is in fact China. Over at LSL sister publication Outsourced Pharma, I wrote a while back in an editorial (Biopharma Outsourcing Shall Be Revealed) that the general public one day will come to understand the full extent of the drug development and manufacturing our pharma industry outsources to China. Drug supply chains for U.S. patients are in many cases dependent on China, a dangerous situation. China thus also plays a role in the pricing of drugs in the U.S., and the profitability of U.S. pharma companies. Trump, pharma and China are more closely intertwined than many understand. But again, that public enlightenment can’t be far away. Trump may ensure that revelation happens on his watch. As you say, “yadda yadda” won’t be a good explanation to U.S. consumers and patients of the predicament.
Thank you for the further insight, Jeff. I, too, quickly came to understand the vital role (or lack of) for Angel investors, VC or other private equity, in a region looking to grow biopharma.
Thanks, Rob. Utica, Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo and on to Erie. Each city and area has its separate challenges, but the success of each can also help with the economic success of the others. And that chain of success can be applied throughout the U.S. to areas looking to move forward. Bio/Pharma/CDMO companies continue to increase as drivers for development.

Life Science Leader : Can Boston And San Francisco Remain The Center Of Biopharma’s Universe

Rob: Indeed, Outsourced Pharma Philadelphia looks to be both another exciting OP conference, such as we have had annually in Boston,San Diego and San Francisco, but also a unique venue for us to talk about drug development and manufacturing outsourcing. The agenda for OP-Philly has been released ( http://outsourcedpharmaevents.com/agenda/agenda-p... ). The U.S. certainly has room for even more biopharma clusters to expand to can't-overlook status, even while the established centers work through their growth and success.
