Though any veteran M:tG player will tell you, there are only finitely many possible card archetypes, so similarities are inevitable, especially since for a set to function properly it needs to have most, if not all, of those archetypes present in one form or another.
You need counter spells, bounce spells, fatties, glass cannons, draw effects, cantrips, lockdowns, and a myriad of other things. How you go about filling those roles is what tends to vary.
