In this video, most of the wars in history have been in either Europe or the Middle East. These areas of the world were completely hammered throughout history. There were small and huge wars that cause a great deal of casualties. At first, there were only a few wars here and there. This changed as time went by. The numbers and sizes of wars increased continually throughout time in the Middle East and Europe. The wars expanded to east of china as well. This can be due to the expansions of powerful empires located near valuable resources. These empires would battle to gain land or resources which increased their power. The more wars that an empire wins will lead to a stronger empire. As time passed, the population and technology increased. This would cause larger wars to happen. The battles could now expand to other parts of the world. Empires would want to seek new land (North and South America). In the later years there were some wars in Central America as well as the northeastern part of North America. Also there were few huge wars were because of World War 1 and 2. Near the end of the video, there were huge wars in southwest Asia as well, including Japan.
As I watched the video, I did not know that there has been this many huge wars in history. Yes, I know there have always been battles around the world for territory and power, but could not imagine how many wars there have been especially in the Middle East. I have known that there were always huge empires in Europe, which would lead to wars. There have been a number of games that have come out about the conquest of Europe. Also I am surprised about the size of some battles. There was couple of huge battles that took up basically the whole screen in the video. These battles should have ended with so many casualties with troops and civilians. The idea of war has been with people for as long as we can remember, and this will not change.

I am glad that Mr. Devoureau brought this up to the state because this company has no right to judge who this person is and how they live their lives. He has been living as a man his whole life and everyone around him has seen him as a man. He had gone through a sex change and “officially” became a man. The state of Georgia and his social security administration identifies him as a man. So who is to judge if he is a man or not? He has fallen into the gender perception in today’s society; either a person is a man or a female. There should be no in between. This reminds me of the sociology book that there are really five types of genders out in society and only two genders are recognized.
Right now there are still fights for gay and lesbian marriages. I would guess that people would understand gay and lesbian marriages more than transgender. Transgender really have a hard perception put on them in society. It is just that the population of transgender is small and cases that deal with transgender rarely come up. In the article Mr. Devoureau’s executive director of the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund said “it was the first employment case in the country to take on the question of a transgender person’s sex.”
This case was not due to him not being a man, but his boss not liking the idea of a transgender working there. His birth certificate has recognized him as a man and so do many. Why do there have to be those that disagree? The strongest quote in the article is when Mr. Devoureau said “They were judging me for who I am, not for the job I was being asked to do, and that’s wrong.” People need to keep their judgments to themselves or even better do not judge at all. Those that judge needs to take a better perspective; they need to step out of their shoes and step into some else’s. They just need to look at their perspective and understand why.

This is a very interesting subject that deals a lot of the media. The media portrays a message to the society, thus the society will be hooked on that idea. The media has portrayed a false image for women. Most videos and movies represent women to want sex and greed, and the man who drinks, smokes, and abusive to their partner. This is upsetting, but it has been seen throughout society. Males have become aggressive with the opposite sex. In reality women are still the same as they always were and want chivalry in a man. Men are stubborn and cannot see this clearly, and maybe are why the lifer found this out while he was in jail.
I really enjoyed what the lifer had to say about how men should act to the opposite sex, or mostly just in general. There are common courtesies that people should always do. Even something like holding the door is really nice to see in society. It is not even a hard thing to do, but it is been seen less and less in society. He should make sacrifices for the one he loves and make her feel great.
The list that what a man is, is the opposite of is being portrayed in many movies and videos. A man should be a protector and a lover. This is most certainly true, and I cannot think of a woman that would disagree with this fact. A man should be able to take care of his partner physically and mentally. A lover should go hand and hand with protector. To take care of the partner, one would one to satisfy her. A man should be able to all the things a woman would want to do and should not be ashamed of it. The media portrays that men should never do some of these things and should be ashamed of it. Again media portrays a macho man who should be with his friends and the women should be stay at home. This is a perfect example of how much control the media has on the society. The media can control the belief of the majority of society.

Everyone can tell there are inequalities between the different classes in our society. There are basically three classes in society. There are the rich, middle-class, and the poor. In the economy today, it can be seen more clearly that the rich continually get richer and the poor continually become poorer. The upper-class has more aid and knowledge for them to handle their money. The rich know how to handle their money better than the poor because they are raised with experience when the poor have no experience at all. People are shaped by their surroundings and the people around them. Sam also said that there are very rare circumstances that a people will jump up in classes (a poor person becoming rich). One way is winning the lottery but there are very little chances of winning. If a person from the low-class did win, they would not know how to handle their money and would soon be gone. They would be where they were in the beginning. Also a point is that they cannot fit in with different classes, there are too many differences (a example can be from the article about the poor family buying a huge house and throwing all the paintings away).
It is very surprising to hear that the rich are getting tax breaks while the poor are still being taxed. How is this any fair? Well it is not, and will continue to bring down the economy. This helps only a small percentage of the population within a country and cannot bring up the economy. The lower-classes should be frustrated with this but they are not. A reason could be that they are shaped to believe that there are no tax cuts for them. They are helpless and have no idea how to gain tax breaks and overall have no say in society, though they are one of the biggest percentages. The voices herds in society are people from the top in power which are coming from the upper-class which have no experience how to handle the lower part of the classes. A general idea is that the poor are giving up and are not trying to get out of their situations to become failures. But is this really the case? Their actions are shaped by the society we live in.

15 years ago @ World In Conversation - Managing Crowds - SOC 001 · 0 replies · +1 points

Managing crowds may seem like a simple concept, but it is very difficult as can be seen from the article. During emergencies, many people act irrational and frantically and cause other people more stress. Everyone is just thinking about themselves and possibly the people they are with to get themselves out of danger. As the article states, people within a city or area cannot be controlled during the emergency. This is when people act most crazily. This is why there needs to be a well thought out plan that can gain people out of a city or area safely and calmly. Though there are plans to evacuate cities like ones near nuclear reactors, but there are always variables to their plans. Those that are in serious danger needs to evacuate first, but people that are in semi-safe places evacuate too. This causes the roads to be very crowded and causes people to be left behind. Also a very important concept in an evacuation plan is to have the same one as bordering cities. These plans need to be flaw proof (which is never the case) or near it before something like a natural disaster occurs.
Crowds during chaos bring a great concept that people need someone to lead them. As one person would start going one way, then the crowds would generally follow. This can be seen as a sheep’s herd and the crowd is the sheep. The few that are the herd are usually calm in the face of stress and uses logic to decide their decisions. This also can be seen in everyday life. A great example is what Sam Richards said one day in class when he was in the audience. He said that he was the first one to clap while standing up and then the whole crowd starts to follow. No one wants to do something that no one else is doing. It is just how people work. They always need someone to follow. This becomes less weird for people to act a certain way because they see other people around them doing the same. Even if people want to act a certain way (stand up while clapping), they do not because they do not want to be the only one or be singled out in the whole crowd.

15 years ago @ World In Conversation - Japan's Disaster · 0 replies · +1 points

The disaster that had happened in Japan should be well known to everyone now across the world. It has been on the news since the disaster, and has been talked amongst people for those that do not watch the news. There are already multiple support groups getting fundraisers in my local area for Japan. These pictures are really well portrayed and should be broadcast to the public. People around the world can see the devastation in the country from the earthquake and tsunami. I would never have guessed the amount of destruction these natural disasters has brought the country. This horrific event has put a huge casualty to the population. There are many families that had their homes destroyed and will have nowhere to live. All their property and belongings that they could have not carried was destroyed; they should have not brought much with them either. Some families that still have houses can be lacking food because the huge demand for food since before the disaster hit the island. Everyone in the population of Japan has been affected one way or another.
This video is presented well because people can see how the country looked right before the tsunami hit. They can realize the actual extent of how much damage this earthquake and tsunami combined did. Everyone knows that tsunamis and earthquakes leave places and disasters, but in this video they can see the actual damage. They can see the water overflowing from the bridge destroying cars, houses, and pushing boats into places. This video brings new perspective to everyone because it shows the before and aftermath of the tsunami. Though it is weird how news broadcasting stations receive new broadcast footage even though time has passed. The videos should be released to the public early as possible, but they only deliver pictures first then videos. I believe a reason can be that the news stations would want people to keep tuning into their channels on T.V. for new updates. After major disasters, news channels on T.V. will always become for popular because the population has their interest in them.

15 years ago @ World In Conversation - The Lottery as a Bless... · 0 replies · +1 points

Many people do imagine what they would probably do if they won or received a million dollars; most would try to improve their lives and invest the rest. This is not the case that we perceive though. Many people return to their normal lives after wasting their money on wanted goods. As can be seen in the CNN article, many winning the lottery do not know what to do with their new found wealth. They buy new houses and cars, but their spending rates will soon make their money, even millions, will not last long. The people who spend their money like this after winning the lottery might be worse off than winning the lottery in the first place. This is because of all the taxes that come into play with these purchases; just like the ones that come out of the lottery after winning. These taxes are exceptionally high and need a steady income to pay them off, so many would go into debt with various companies. This is the “funny” part of winning the lottery for some, they would actually be owing money to people after couple years.
People cannot change their social class that fast, even if they come into a rich fortune. These people need to be either taught or grown up within an upper class society. This can be clearly seen in when someone from the lower class wins the lottery; though most of the lottery tickets are sold to the lower class. But it is not just this spending problem; the lower class society does not know how to fit in with the higher class. Even though they have the house or car, people can clearly see they do not fit in. A middle class and especially and upper class would probably have no problem controlling their spending habits and invest in their money. They already fit in with the upper society so there is no change for their life style/friends. As can be seem through society, the upper class would probably not buy lottery tickets because they would know the odds of winning are very low.

15 years ago @ World In Conversation - FEAR · 0 replies · +1 points

I have thought about how fear plays a role into everyone’s lives before reading this article. I have seen fear shape many people into who they become. Fear is definitely an emotion that plays a huge impact into a person’s decisions. A person’s fear leads them to choose certain choices, and it shapes those (invisible strings) throughout life and creates their lives accordingly. Every single person has a different standpoint on certain risky decisions; some would go further than other. Fear is the reason behind this; and is why that it part of our daily lives.
Fear can have its ups and downs. Like in this article, fear can help one to continue on a path of righteousness. People would be scared of the possessions they could lose or the consequences of breaking laws. This fear can help improves a person’s life, and not get them into trouble. Though thinking about fear all the time will bring a life of unhappiness. They will be continuously scared of doing anything dangerous or would have to weigh out the consequences in every decision.. Like in the movie Along Came Polly, Ben Stiller continues to make safe and unnecessary risks. He had almost lost the girl he likes because of his harmless behaviors. Fear can be a great or a dangerous thing. The balance of fear along with its decision making is the key to keeping people safe and happy.
The fears in this article are very similar to many. It is true that men do not like talking about fear, but they do have as many fears as women. Many reading this article at the moment will not think about the first fear this lifer has wrote. College students certainly do not even think about death, but it true that death has occurred all around us. One biggest fear from college students biggest can be failure or not succeeding. We feel failure of not doing our best in college and getting the grades we want. This will soon make us suffer our future because we will not be getting the jobs that we could have gotten or wanted. The future is a mystery but a fear as well.

This video shows many different cultural differences there are in a different country on the other side of the world. It might be unusual to many that are not familiar to the idea of polygamy and see it as weird or disturbing, but it is part of their culture. Of course it is not accustomed here in the United States, and the idea of polygamy is absurd. The only thing that troubles people minds when they hear about this is that it does not fit into their own culture. Many different places have various unique cultures that are particular to that region. People who view other cultures should have open minds because many aspects of life are different. In this video, everyone was confortable about the idea of marrying the same women; even all the men were brothers as well. In fact, this customs is very logical and beneficial for them.
Their culture has become accustomed to polygamy because their social structure required it. The invisible force allows them to be comfortable with marrying more than one men or women. It aids everyone in the relationship especially the rule that the government set of having only one child because of over population. This can be call “free will” to be able to marry more than one person, but their free decisions are factored by the social structure they live in. The factors of the society are forcing them to act and think certain ways. Because of this, people can see the invisible strings are prevalent in our society as well. It is largely influenced because no one in various countries, like the United States, would ever think about having more than one spouse. People can truly see how their lives are affected by society which we have no control over. The marriage and relationship statuses in many different societies are very different. People will always be influenced by society and people cannot choose what society there are born in. They will just have to live and adapt to their society’s standards; they cannot change who they will be brought up to believe.

I believe that through each generation, more and more people will be getting passports, though I never would have guessed that low percent of Americans have passports. This will change over time like it already has been; also a point in the article is that it will soon be inevitable to get a passport. There will be many jobs requiring going overseas to another country. More and more people will understand the importance of going out of the country; it can be beneficial many aspects of their lives including enhancing their education. I believe that having a diverse background (traveling a lot) would look good on a resume. They have experienced and learned about many different cultures and could probably use something beneficial they have learned into their own lives including work methods; becoming more productive.
This article does show many different categories why people do not travel. I believe that the two biggest ones are money and fear. Fear was mainly explained about the downfall within a country that the media portrays, the fear of flying also plays a big factor in traveling. Driving to various places within the United States would save money and cut the factor of fear. They feel more comfortable with in their country. Also some can be ignorant and say the United States can give the same experience and culture as going to the actual country. There is no comparison between the real country and the little fake one in the United States.
I feel that the need to go the college and make money as fast as you can brings down the traveling outside of America. In the United States there are rare circumstances that people actually take a one year leave and go traveling. The need to survive is based on money and the competition has risen tremendously for various jobs. People need to boost their resumes more and more as years go by. There is no time to slack off in today’s society; individuals basically need out-compete others. Traveling would in a sense compromise their goal by taking time away. All these factors do bring down the human free choice that everyone believes that everyone has. The social systems that surround Americans lean them toward certain decisions, including traveling in this case.
