There is a vast difference between high volume horizontal fracking and the drilling presently being done in Chenango County. HVHF'ing is a massive industrial operation. Brian Conover's remarks fall back on the industry mantra; don't address the issues, dismiss any very real concerns or questions as "hyperbole" or "fear". Attack any studies or academics that challenge the rosy picture big gas is trying to paint. I put more stock in Professors such as Anthony Ingraffea, Robert Howarth, and Conrad Volz than I do studies paid for by the industry. Like it or not Mr. Conover, we have a right not only to question your claims, but a right to choose if we want our communities to be "fracked" or not. Our area here may not be a target for the Marcellus, but we are sitting on top of the Utica. According to the industry, "The Utica Shale has a much higher carbonate content than the Marcellus Shale and a lower clay mineral content. This difference in mineralogy produces a very different response to hydraulic fracturing treatments. The methods used in the Marcellus do not produce as much fracturing in the Utica. However, fracturing rates might be improved with new techniques as more information is gathered." Personally, I prefer not to be an unwilling guinea pig in a massive, pollution spewing experiment.
