Big Hollywood : In Memoriam: Andrew Breitbart (1969-2012)

I'm so very shocked and sorry. Breitbart was a real happy warrior. I've loved his work -- he's been inspiring, exhilarating, pugnacioius, vital -- anyone who cares about having a truly free press is indebted to him. I'm so sorry for his family.

Big Hollywood : Next Year, Sacha Baron Cohen Should Host the Oscars

Tony, surely you've noticed the low, low ratings the Oscars ceremony has been pulling in for years now? Clearly conservatives are not the only ones who find the Oscars lacking -- though of course, taking that fact into account would get in the way of the conservative hate you've obviously got going.

Big Hollywood : Daily Call Sheet: Rabbit Ears Return, Depp Is No Kolchak, Spectacular Links!

Alas, I am serious. I read about this a good year ago, though, and have heard nothing since (not that I really keep up with this stuff), so maybe someone wisely decided to drop it. You know, my biggest criticism of Netflix is that they don't offer enough of the classic films that have been released on DVD -- because I'd much rather watch The Big Sleep or His Girl Friday for the sixth time than watch the current remakes of TV series from the '70s and '80s, gross-out comedy or "social conscious raising" bore.

Johnny Depp as Kolchak, huh? And wasn't he also slated to play Nick Charles in a remake of that classic, The Thin Man? As if anyone could replace the witty, elegant William Powell! But once again, I'm struck by Hollywood's lack of creativity in recent years. The movies are all remakes, or the actors are impersonating actors of previous generations. This has become one sad, inbred industry!

Have to agree with BJ. The difference between Emilia Fox's age and Charles Dance's was just too enormous -- it was creepy. While Maxim is supposed to be the older, cultured man of the world, Dance is old enough to be Fox's grandfather. Ick!

Big Hollywood : 'Notorious' (1946) Blu-ray Review: Hitchcock's Greatest Film Arrives In High-Definition

Thank you, Mr. Nolte!! I have been head-over-heels for this film since I first saw it as a teenager, more than 20 years ago. The first couple of times, watching Grant steal into the house and up to the bedroom where they are keeping the poisoned Alicia, I was on the edge of my seat with the suspense. The way the camera circles them when Devlin finds Alicia here, and also in their first love scene ... heady stuff! And yes, Claude Rains is fantastic too -- it wouldn't be as complex a film without his performance of Sebastian. I weigh my words carefully when it comes to movies too, and I wouldn't hesitate to say that this one has been a top 5 for me for most of my life. A fun line from the bit where Alicia claims she is no patriot and Devlin plays her own words back to her: "Relax, Hard-boiled, and listen."

As a former literature major, I was psyched to see "Shakespeare In Love" when it was released -- and then mightily let down when I saw it. I thought it was enamoured of its own cleverness and sort of pandered to the audience that way -- if you got all the references, all the "in-jokes" you must be clever too! And I couldn't buy the ending. As for Judi Dench winning the Oscar -- well, normally I'm a big fan of Dench's, but in this case, she won an award for a few minutes of a one-note performance. Kathy Bates should have won that year, hands down, for her kick-butt performance in Primary Colors.

Big Hollywood : Hollywood's Problems Deeper Than Roster of Best Picture Noms No One Saw

You said it, HoosierHistorian! Just saw Contagion on HBO, and that was good; I would love to see Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, but it isn't in any theaters close by; The Help looks good, but I can't imagine my Macho-Man SO spending the time and money to go see what I think a lot of men will regard as a "chick flick." Other than those titles, I really don't care what Hollywood is cranking out these days. And this is from someone who is passionate about movies. But I'd rather watch The Maltese Falcon for the 5th time.

I suspect it's that the character sleeps with one person SHE JUST MET that prompted the "slut" label. I saw the movie. It tried to be about loss, redemption, etc., etc., but I thought it was over-wrought and self important. Some scenes dragged on endlessly and seemed to be nothing more than one of those old Bennetton ads, celebrating "diversity." Debra Winger, on the other hand, was marvelous. But that reasoned response may be too much for someone who hurls around insults such as "you and your ilk are hostile sexists ..."

"when she was publicly humiliated by that idiot Jesse James (whatever happened to him?) - and amid all that she is entertaining some recently returned troops from the mideast, and joking that her personal life was like meeting an IED, well, she made me a fan. That's class." Yup. And I sure hope Bullock stays that way! I haven't loved every movie she's done, but at least she seems to understand that being gracious and creating good will are smart things for a movie star to do.
