Not for the first time, I am jealous of the humble Chimera. AV12, decent set of gun options, invisible on the Force Org. chart, and even with the Veterans inside, I bet it's cheaper than many squads without a transport.

Indeed!

I honestly feel that the Guard and the Craftworld Eldar are the most genuinely tragic races in all the forty-first millennium; they're the only ones who commit ordinary people to the battlefield, and the only ones where those ordinary people take on a role which they are fully expected not to survive.

My pal Shiny has always complained about the strange attitude of the Eldar, who send their butchers, bakers, candlestick-makers and manufacturers of bespoke musical instruments not only into combat, but into the very worst 'here is your basic equipment, now HOLD THIS GROUND' aspects of combat. It seems like curiously suicidal behaviour for a dying race; as you say, such tactics are born of dark and desperate days, when the survival of your people is less important than the state of the world you leave behind you.

They've been trying tournaments for quite a while (first WFB GT was, ooh, '94, '95 - not long before I started playing, since I remember reading the reports on the second one in a WD that came out after I'd been playing for about twelve months). I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that maybe trying something new and genuinely groundbreaking, something that's more suited to the kind of games they write (whatever people misguidedly believe, WFB is a poor tournament game, especially the 8th edition, for reasons I'll be happy to discourse upon given my druthers and an appropriate space in which to do so)...

... no, wait. I keep forgetting that GW isn't owned by gamers, but by people who just want a decent return on investment at the end of the year. If the company doesn't need to push the envelope in order to achieve that, it won't - it has no particular reason to.

Exactly my point, and exactly the kind of vocabulary shift I'd like to see. Plus, I like the word 'convocation' - we should use it more often.

Your second Troops choice is proably Vets with meltaguns. There's pushing the boat out, and then there's crazy talk.

I wish you could as well.

I'm sure we are. I don't usually go cruising to disagree with people; more to comment, or to clarify, or to expand.

It actually sounds like quite a decent event from what GMort's had to say - just not a very good tournament.

Personally, if I were going to take such an event at all seriously, I'd like to take a well-chosen list that's modelled and painted to the best of my ability and inclination, and be as respectful and generally pleasant as is warranted by the company and occasion. I don't see why one should have to be compromised for the other; make a good list, make it gorgeous*, and show someone a good time, that's what I say.

* - well, these days I strive for 'not mediocre', but you get the idea.

Maybe I'm going stark raving mad here, but why even bother calling it a tournament if it's not one? Are people really conditioned to only turn out for events marketed as tournaments, like hyper-competitive Pavlovian dogs? Call it a campaign weekend, call it the Big Nerd Meet '11, keep calling it Throne of Skulls if you really want to and just redefine what events held under that banner *are*. If it's a big meetup for gamers to play games and nothing more, then don't be disingenous about it, be proud of what it is!
