MetsBlog.com : Note: 100 Men Left on Base

I assume you're talking about the 7th inning with Delgado. I'm sorry but I can't agree with that. If you're talking about our cleanup hitter looking to sacrifice himself with a fly ball in that situation, you might as well as have Beltran bunt with a man on second and no out. He's up there with the bases juiced and a well place hit will likely tie the game. That's what you want from your cleanup hitter in that situation. You never want to take away the agressiveness from Delgado. You want him going for the kill rather that have him trying to hit a sac fly as his first priority.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with much of this analysis. For me, yesterday for the most part was more the breaks as opposed to the "struggle" with RISP. If you looked at it, in both the 5th and 6th innings, everything started with 2 outs and the bases empty. Reyes tripled with 2 outs in the 5th and then Murphy hit a comebacker to the pitcher. Then in the sixth, Beltran and Sheffield singled and doubled (respectively) with 2 outs and Tatis flied out. While I'm not saying it's impossible to score in those situations, I think we have the realize the probability is small as the first one will require consecutive hits where one must be extra bases. In the second one, you'll need 3 consecutive hits. And of course, the 7th and 8th both ended on hard hit balls that just happened to see its way into a fielder which are just the breaks in baseball.

Well, wasn't Maine the clear #2 before his second start yesterday too? Now if Livan falters tonight, who's the new #2? I'd wait until each's had 5 starts under their belt this season before overanalyzing all this.

Well, you're just going to have toforgive me for that as I did not have TV in front of me while I was sitting in my seat watching the 3rd strike get called. I assume that with 2 strikes, anything close to the plate you swing the bat especially with RISP. If that pitch was really 6 inches outside, I take back what I said.

You might want to ask guys like Willie Mays, Doc Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, Tommy Agee, and etc etc about whether JR had anything to do with the Mets. Saying JR has nothing to do with the Mets is like saying MLK Jr has nothing to do with Wisconsin or Maine.

I love CF and my promenade box seats. While I agree there might be some things that could be better, I'm surprised that the complaints aren't anything I expect. If anything, the only thing I have a problem with is the seemingly less capable concession workers. I could swear the lines at Shea moved a lot faster. I was in line for 2 innings last night for a hot chocolate and a hot dog...and there were no more than 30 customers in line. But hey, I'd take that if it means I'm not attending games at Shea.

You know where else you can see the whole field? Try the airplane as you're leaving NY as that might actually be closer to the field as the nosebleeds of Shea.

With reyes, the problem is he has 2 approaches to every at bat. When he's patient and goes with the pitch, he's great. However, for what I've seen, it seems to me he's looking to hit the first ball that's anywhere close when there are RISP. He can be patient and discipline one AB and then completely the opposite the next. I think focus (sound familiar?) is his problem.

To be fair, Wright has always hit doubles consistently in his career. He never stopped. The problem is now pitchers are pitching him inside which causes him to pull which some may say is going with the pitch. Hitters aren't the only ones adjusting, pitchers do too. When pitchers adjust in the way they pitch to a certain player, it takes a while for the hitter to readjust to the way he's being consistently pitched too. Word gets around in the scouting community and what works against Wright for one pitcher will certainly be emulated by others.

Not for nothing but I think the hitting with RISP has been a little over-criticized. If you go back and look at the 5 losses, there's only 1 game which the hitting with RISP was autrocious (4/10 game where they went 1 for 10). For the rest, they were combined 6 for 21 in those situations and that's not counting the walks and the sac flies. If anything, FCs which drove in runs were counted as failures when talking BA/RISP. In many situations in those chance they had in those losses, the runners got into scoring position with 2 outs so you're pretty much going against probability. Just wanted to be fair when it comes to stuff like this. Even last night, they were 1 for 4 with RISP and scored 3 runs which I'd take any given day. And one of the 4 situations is where Murphy's 2 out double put men in scoring position which when then require a consecutive hit from Wright to score them. And if anything, that was the AB which I am most critical of because Wright didn't even swing his bat as he struck out looking.

What I'm interested to see is how many of the men we left on base reached before 2 outs. The total LOB that shows up in boxscores is a bit deceiving because it makes no adjustments for when the men reached base. Say for example 2 guys reached base with no outs and both were left on base, that would show up in the boxscore the same as if 2 guys hit consecutive singles with 2 outs and then get stranded. However, when we look at those two situations, the difference is day and night. I think many of us forget to account for that when we see the LOB in the boxscore the day after.

I think they'll be motivated with Willie in town:) As for Wright, I'm not worried. If anything, his K numbers will most likely end up in the 110-120 range like he's done the last 4 years. If anything, didn't he start out 07 with horrible numbers too? It's a marathon, not a sprint. And if anything, they're only 1 game under .500 so I'd wait a bit longer belong actually panicking.

Too inconsistent to go on a hot streak? If every team is consistent, they'd be on a hot streak all the time. If anything, hot streak are the results of inconsistency, as in inconsistently GOOD. Otherwise, if they're consistently good, it wouldn't be called a hot streak because they'd be doing it all season and would only have cold streaks. That's just baseball.

Well, since you brought it up, how is losing by 1 and 2 not keeping the team in it. Is it dissapointing? Yes, but it's only 9 games and it's no time to give up on the season already. While I have booed at the games in previous seasons, it really bothers me who people are booing the team already in its 3rd home game. Yes, every game matters but these are the breaks. Some goes our way and some doesn't. Last night was a bit disturbing since it was another botched defensive play (granted it was by a Bartman kin) but that's no reason to think the season won't turn around. Heck, we're only 1 game under .500 and a winning streak would fix it really quick.
