Maybe it's the introvert in me, but I do not want to live in that world at all. My mother won't go to the grocery store without putting her full face on and wearing at least business casual, and lord, it seems exhausting.

Thank you, Laura! This is wonderful. My hair has gotten darker as an adult and now I'm dying it to be more intensely auburn, because I consider being a redhead as an essential part of my personality. And I think this piece sums up why perfectly -- it's a constant part of your childhood and how people see you.

What is it with old ladies and redheaded children? Happened to me all the damn time, to the point that at like 6 I remember seeing a strange woman coming up to me and my mom and thinking, "Here we go again."
