Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: USC fallout

Great observation. That also explains why Nick Holt gets more TV time than Steve Sarkisian during UW games. The cameras are trained on Holt waiting for his head to explode. http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/huskyfootba...

A Great Game! But I do wonder.... the two games we've dominated, we've knocked out the #1 QB. Also, the wins have come against teams that didn't have a running QB. So although we looked great, a win is a win, and beating USC is GREAT, I wonder if we can handle a pistol or a spread or whatever it is the ucks run?

The Paea sack stat is interesting. Here's the top 5: Swancutt 37, Butler 25.5, Breckterfield 19.5, Norris 19, Kane Rogers 16. Just another sign of how far our defense has fallen off as our biggest defensive stud might get 13 sacks with 3 games left in his career.

Good post Cliff. Lots of food for thought. Here's something else....who are the leaders on this team on offense and defense? In the past on offense it was Moevao or Canfield. On defense?? Guys like Bill Swancutt come to mind...or Al Afalava. But who is it this year? Who is out on the field leading the team and playing like their hair is on fire? I think Katz will be the guy eventually, but on defense? I don't know. James Doc? Your thoughts?

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: UCLA fallout

I'm with you Corvbeav. The 2000 team that went 11-1 followed it up with 5-6 the next year. Most first year QB's struggle. Katz is up and down. And yes, the play calling was odd and the defense can't stop the run even when they know it's coming. Mike and his staff will learn from their mistakes and fix it. But that doesn't mean we win out. It's a long season and you got to trust it.

I thought that was incredibly questionable play calling too. What were are chances of going 70 yards in a minute and change and kicking a field goal anyway?! Play for the OT and run some clock and DO NOT give the ball back to UCLA!

I was amazed at how our Beavs came out lacking very little enthusiasm on either side of the ball. Truly amazing. No one was flying around, no one put a big hit on any Bruin ball carrier. That being said, I thought the discussion on TV during the Oregon/UW game about 5 or 6 Duck coaches with 20+ years of experience was amazing. Continuity is important. So let's not throw out Mike and his staff quite yet. I'm sure that back in the day when Oregon's defense gave up 50 a game that fans wanted their DC gone....but he's still there.....and they're not giving up very many points.....

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Numbers game

We are 3-3 with losses to the #2 and #4 team in the country. Had Katz played marginally better, we beat UW. Had we scheduled PSU and New Mexico instead of TCU and Boise....well you know the story. Coach Banker has had some pretty stout defenses over the years and has coached some studs. He knows how to coach and develop players. Calling Coach Banker a "huge liability" is plainly ridiculous.

Greg McElroy was a Junior and had played in six games as a sophomore and two games as a freshman. By being a Junior, had had one more year in Alabama's system vs. Katz who is a sophomore. Katz played in four games as a freshman including mop up roles against PSU and BYU. A couple snaps vs. Washington and a few more against WSU. Who else do you have on your list?? Matt Barkley (no), Andrew Luck (no), Colt McCoy (no), Sam Bradford (no), Jake Locker (heck no), Vince Young (no)

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Numbers game

I'm fairly confident that Coach Riley and his staff know where the weaknesses are. And I'm sure that they know that there is only so much they can do mid-season. They can't make trades or go into the free agent market like the pros do to shore up the defense. It is what it is. Also, who in the conference, or in all of college football wins with a first year qb? In the games we've lost, Katz got outplayed by better, much more experienced qb's. Had he not thrown three picks against UW, we'd be 3-0 in the conference and there would be far less grumbling about the coaching staff. When Katz plays better, like against U of A, the offense stays on the field and keeps the defense off the field. All the stats improve. Granted we are not going be top-10 in any of the offensive or defensive categories with this group of guys, but it is what it is. Finish in the top half of the conference this year, get James back next year and look out in 2011! Katz will be more experienced and the Rodgers Brothers will be seniors! For this year though, it's going to be up and down. Get used to it.

Brooks Hatch : Brooks Hatch: Friday update 10/15

Thanks for the update Brooks. I'm a little late to this party, so can you tell me how the schedule will round out in football? Right now, we play the 9 conference opponents and 3 non-conference games. In the future, we'll play the other 5 northern schools. Will we rotate 4 of the 6 southern schools to get to 9 conference games? Is playing in the conference title game a bonus game? Like playing Hawaii?? Thanks.
