The one permanent emotion of the inferior man is fear - fear of the unknown, the complex, the inexplicable. What he wants above everything else is safety. ~Henry Louis Mencken When is the last time anyone has heard of a police officer being injured, killed on duty? Police today is obsessed with safety...their own! Used to be that being a police officer was a dangerous job. Now? I'm no pro-life advocate (ie, preserve life at all cost), everyone dies is my motto. However, my problem is with the lack of forethought. I mean, why KILL? Can't you injure? I'd rather lose a leg, arm, ear...at least I'd still be alive. As for the family...they're doing the right thing. What people don't understand is that there is doing one's job, then there is doing one's job so poorly that people die. Doesn't necessarily make a bad person (stupid, maybe), but nonetheless you need to be held accountable. How can they possibly now improvement is needed unless families like this one step up to the plate and report it? Paying money is the only way they "get it"...although, I don't think they really are. They'd rather be right than respected, I guess.
