I can't believe the genius editors at the Gazette let the author of this story slip one fact about last night's game into this story. Shame on them! /sarcasm BRING BACK REAL BASEBALL COVERAGE IN CEDAR RAPIDS!!! Great story, Jeff. I know you don't control your situation and appreciate all you do.

When did the Gazette become a public relations mouthpiece for the Kernels? This isn't news. This isn't informative. It's fluff. The paper's Kernels coverage has been beyond disappointing all season long. It would be nice to read actual news about the games and players as opposed to worthless drivel like this.

GazetteOnline.com : Iowa City bar owner says 21-entry age is hurting business

If they charge $10 to $20 per person for cover and the majority of that money goes toward security those guys must have one heck of an hourly wage. Do the math. The majority of those cover charges go in the pocket of the bar owners as straight profit - and that's why they're crying. Their 'extra' revenue has dried up. Iowa City made its own bed and slept in it for quite a while before realizing the sheets needed to be washed. Allowing minors into bars was a bad idea from the get-go. Now that it's being corrected, there are new problems to deal with. But the bar owners are just as implicit in all this. They've made their living off of looking the other way to underage drinking for years. Anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot or the owner of one of those bars.

Umm..quoting from the article: The Kernels (19-14) pulled into second place, within a game of first place in the Midwest League’s Western Division with three go-ahead runs in the seventh. Starting pitcher Patrick Corbin improved to a league-leading 6-0 by allowing only three hits over eight innings.

The same firm engineered the construction of the Sprint Center in Kansas City (as well as most of that city's Power and Light District), American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Seattle's Safeco Field (home of the MLB Mariners) and the University of Wisconsin's Kohl Center.
Do you know the costs of having such events? The city would be on the hook for security for the event as well as cleanup, promoting/marketing the events, etc. etc. You'd likely be lucky to break even - all while adding more wear and tear to the facility.

As per my comment below, an 80 year old facility does not cut the mustard anymore. At least it doesn't without millions upon millions of dollars being continually thrown into a sinkhole. Minor League baseball has standards for every single affiliate, ones they must meet or lose baseball all together. The clubhouse space at the old stadium was grossly inadequate. There were too few restrooms, the concourse was crowded, yada yada yada. It was time for the old park to be replaced. Where the city has dropped the ball is in keeping the new park in proper working order.

Did you not read the article? The 'continual maintenance program' is what the city has dropped the ball on. If you don't maintain a roof, it's going to leak. If you don't maintain a COMMERCIAL HVAC system it's going to break down. The scoreboard will most likely be paid for by the Kernels should they choose to replace it. The author of the article could have done everyone a favor by pointing that out. Replacing it would be a luxury for the Kernels, not a necessity.

People should never speak on issues of which they have no knowledge. It was never as simple as keeping the old ballpark and throwing the gates open. Professional minor league baseball has standards for everything from the playing surface, size of clubhouses, lighting conditions, etc. The old stadium was woefully inadequate in all regards and, had the new stadium not been built, Cedar Rapids stood a very good chance of eventually losing baseball. Feel free to not believe that, but those that know Minor League Baseball know it's the truth. The City of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, replaced a stadium after only 15 years of use prior to last season. Guess what they're doing this year? Capital improvements. After just one year! They're staying on top of the job. As for raising ticket prices, any individual with common sense should be able to understand that the added revenue from a new 'ticket tax' would likely be offset by the loss of revenue from people staying away from the higher prices. Don't think an extra dollar a ticket would do that? You've never worked in minor league sports. I wish my world view was as myopic as some on here. Do you realize how much having that stadium adds to the quality of life in Cedar Rapids? Do you realize how much money having the Kernels brings in for the city each year? (Visiting teams stay in hotels, they eat meals, they kill time at the mall) By the way, the Kernels pay taxes as well. More money into the city's coffers. You don't buy a car and go 8 years without an oil change.
