Breitbart.com : Kiss, Chili Peppers, LL Cool J nominated for hall

So... KISS wasn't already in the hall? Like their music or not, KISS kind of epitomized the grandiose live show many moons ago... Were they not worthy until 2009? Or was the Rock N' Roll HOF waiting until they could induct them alongside famous Rocker LL Cool J? The building should be renamed the Museum of Popular Music as to disassociate itself with the notion that it is the functional equivalent of an actual HOF. Of course, if it did that we wouldn't be reading about its "nominees" on a national news outlet...

I have first hand experience with insane "Miscellaneous Fees" from a university, but I'd never heard of money being funneled to PIRGs. This is something to look into, and a MAJOR story for any journalist worth their salt.

Beat me to it. I was a bit taken aback at the assessment of a filibuster being moral and a straight majority through reconciliation being somehow immoral.

Just another case of American "untouchables" daring to lay their hands on a higher caste... maybe when we stop believing that Muslims are inferior and, instead, understand, like Indians, that religion has nothing to do with how the social castes should be arranged we'll all be better off... Nevermind, that's completely asinine.

Good post Dave - I have never agreed with the claim that religion was the primary cause of many of the conflicts and problems that sometimes surround it, but rather human distortion and abuse that results in religion being used for illegitimate means. Christianity in particular has been distorted heavily for the past 2000 years. When the most important figure in a religion was an absolute pacifist it seems a bit silly to claim that Christian beliefs foment war rather then human beings.

I take issue with your asserting that "a true atheist would realize that nothing matters at all, including the atheist." The only thing one needs to realize to be a true atheist is that there, in all likelihood, is not a divine creator or other gods that interact with the world we know. I believe you are getting atheists confused with nihilists. Many atheists think quite highly of themselves, humanity, and the world around them out of belief that "this is it." Your "in the absence of any type of progression..." comment confuses me as well. For many atheists, progression on Earth is the only chance for a desirable future we have, and this is where you get into "pushy atheism" that is, at its essence, not very different from evangelism. Some atheists fear that in a world where a large majority are religious, progress will be put on the back burner out of the majority belief that the world will inevitably end when that respective religion's doomsday prophecy comes to pass.

Big Hollywood : When a Little 'Profiling' Might Be a Good Thing

According to the police report, the disorderly conduct charge came after Mr. Gates followed the officer outside and continued to insult him and call out his mother. The 4th amendment does not protect people in their homes, it forbids illegal searches and seizures. Through judicial review, the 4th amendment also extends to your personal privacy. The 4th amendment is not relevant to this incident. Just so you know, you can not "mouth off" to a cop whenever you like anymore then you can mouth of to a judge whenever you like. If anything you say can in any way be perceived as a threat, you are breaking the law. Beyond that, Mr. Gates' words in this situation were grossly irresponsible and, in a more ignorant society, could threaten genuine progress and contribute to the cultural quagmire that is identity politics.

Big Hollywood : Daily Gut: Secret Plans to Kill Bad People

I do not disagree that executive power increased under W. Bush, but I do think that the language you choose to use characterizes the man's security policy. I don't think anyone in the administration made the claim that Bush can "break any law" that he wants, and I don't think that you really mean that when you say that. Although prisoners were waterboarded during certain interrogations, you once again used the word torture... Because the only "torture" Bush has been accused of allowing is waterboarding, why not use the word waterboarding? I know "torture" sounds far more dramatic and much more vile, but the truth has its own sweet ring. In regards to torture, you make the claim that he can torture "any citizen without charge, as long as... it's for national security." Once you get past the hyperbole of the term "torture," what you're saying is more or less correct. Like the Patriot Act, we are more or less told to "have good faith" on this one. I too find the circumvention of certain rights problematic, but, despite having searched high and low, have yet to have found any compelling abuses of this power. Given how people on the left and many on the right felt about Bush, his White House is certainly amongst the most scrutinized in history. Innocents were not arrested and sent to Gitmo left and right. Simply put: it didn't happen. I'm sure mistakes were made, and I'm sure that not everyone sent to the facility was bombing a subway that week, but I do have faith that thorough intelligence was collected prior to taking the drastic measure of seizing a human being. As far as "every principle this country was founded on..." I don't think I can tell you every principle this country was founded on: there are hundreds. The founding fathers were a mentally diverse bunch; they all had their own motivations and ideas of what the principles of the country were to be. Personal protection from the government however, was an afterthought. Our only guaranteed liberties from the founding are found in the Bill of Rights, written after the constitution itself and something devoid from the Articles of Confederation. These rights are basic in nature and not there because they were viewed as innate and obvious, but arguably because of colonial rivalry. Not until the 20th century did every one of the consequential articles in the Bill of Rights even apply to individual states, so pardon me for taking exception to the idea that a single man was attempting to destroy EVERY principle this country was founded on.

Big Hollywood : Moonwalker: The Difference Between Achievement and Artifice

Space travel isn't the easiest thing in the world... going to the Moon is one thing, taking even the next step (Mars) is an entirely different ballgame... There is a permanent and expanding space station at the moment, and the reason for the lack of a lunar base has nothing to do with interest, rather the disproportionate cost vs. scientific value. We are nowhere near manned missions to the edge of the solar systems because of several technological hurdles, first and foremost of which is the energy problem, and believe me: even if interest in space travel has subsided, us Earthlings have been working hard on discovering a means of efficient energy.

Doesn't the school of cultural relativism demand that this plan be enacted immediately? Think about it: terrorist leaders across the Middle East are assassinated, leaving Americans happy with the knowledge that several enemies of the West have been felled and leaving Islamic fundamentalists happy that their esteemed leaders are now enjoying their heavenly harems. If we are to take the faith of these men seriously and respect their culture as though it were our own equivalent, then I, personally, think we're assholes for not executing (no pun intended) this plan.

Destroy every principle this country was founded on!?! Hyperbole is a sign of emotion, and emotion is a sign of a bad and/or dumbass argument... By labeling waterboarding "torture" you're equating it to thumbscrews and the rack: stop yourself. The methods men of our founder's age were willing to use were just a bit more brutal then waterboarding... I think of lot of things about the Bush years, not many of them positive, but I don't think anything that occurred came close to justifying your "destroy every principle this country was founded on" vitriol.
