Equestria Daily : Discussion: Brony Shoutouts - Yay or Neigh?

Wait, isn't "canon ship" kind of an oxymoron? I always thought that shipping implied fanon interpretation as a rule.

Alright, let me phrase it another way, then. In racing, managing your tires is an important aspect; accelerating, braking, and handling all demand their attention, and while not entirely mutually exclusive, trying to multitask your tires brings everything down. Skip Barber's racing school even refers to this in terms of percentages. When an MLP scene is 60% plot, 20% humor, and 20% reference...that's a scene that could've been 60/40 or 80/20 instead. The reference demands the focus of the camera and the hard work of the staff, focus and work that could've been poured into making the episode better.

Canon personality is all that matters when you're talking about the show. They disregard fanon as a rule.

Oh, I'm sure they'll get right on to shoving background characters who completely lack canon personalities into the spotlight for a musical routine.

You say "no Derpy" like it would be a bad thing...then again, that sentence almost makes it sound like I think that "no Derpy" would be a good thing. But yeah, no, enough recent episodes feel rushed and bereft of content as it is; there's no need to waste run time on what's basically null content.

For the negative, right? I mean, look at all the crap they threw into a single episode just to get a rise. It seems more desperate than anything; they were running on the law of averages and hoping at least one of their couple million references would actually be funny. That shows me that they knew how unfunny they were. Easter eggs are not jokes.

Equestria Daily : \"Double Rainboom\" Released

"About the PMV top ten; I wouldn't mind DR getting #1, if anything to acknowledge the crew's immense and somewhat pioneering endeavor..." That sort of thinking is garbage. If I tell you I'm going to build you a chair, it doesn't matter how long I take or if I'm overcoming arthritis or whatever to get it done; the end result had better be a chair. At the very least, it'd be nice if you could put your butt on it and have it support your weight. I'm not sure Double Rainboom was even that. Behind-the-scenes variables like that don't magically improve the quality of the product that reaches its consumers.

And what, pray tell, do you suggest as an alternative course of action? Clap like braindead seals every time the creative side of the fandom throws the bronies a new ball to play with? Blindly praise and coddle the fans that made the episode, leaving them oblivious to faults they could improve upon if they were to make another product? No. I'm actually proud of you bronies; in the old days, a shitty Flash game on Newgrounds with minimal interactivity, story, or fun would get a perfect score just because it had ponies in it. It's nice to see you fellas grow up and realize, "Hey, if we hold creators to higher standards, their output will improve."

Listen to me. All of that stuff...means nothing. In the end, we are consumers, and it is the role of the consumer to care about quality. You and the rest of the Double Rainboom staff do not get "brownie points" because you worked hard on this. You get honest critique and feedback, and from that, hopefully your next product shows improvement. I will tell you right now, the thing that needs the least improvement is the art and animation assets; it's fluid, crisp, and does a bang-up job of delivering on promises of "equal in quality to the show". The writing, on the other hand...there's no sugar-coating it. The writing is awful. Memes, references, and in-jokes do not a good episode make. My suggestion would be to hunt down the author of a great fanfiction; I'm sure if you asked them if you could make their story into an animated episode, they'd be all over that. It doesn't matter if you worked hard on this. It doesn't matter who it was a tribute to. People came into this expecting "an episode of Friendship is Magic on par with what the actual writers would put out", and in my opinion, that's not what they got.
