The reference demands the focus of the camera and the hard work of the staff, focus and work that could've been poured into making the episode better. All of that stuff...means nothing. In the end, we are consumers, and it is the role of the consumer to care about quality. You and the rest of the Double Rainboom staff do not get "brownie points" because you worked hard on this. You get honest critique and feedback, and from that, hopefully your next product shows improvement. I will tell you right now, the thing that needs the least improvement is the art and animation assets; it's fluid, crisp, and does a bang-up job of delivering on promises of "equal in quality to the show". The writing, on the other hand...there's no sugar-coating it. The writing is awful. Memes, references, and in-jokes do not a good episode make. My suggestion would be to hunt down the author of a great fanfiction; I'm sure if you asked them if you could make their story into an animated episode, they'd be all over that. It doesn't matter if you worked hard on this. It doesn't matter who it was a tribute to. People came into this expecting "an episode of Friendship is Magic on par with what the actual writers would put out", and in my opinion, that's not what they got.
