GazetteOnline.com : Analyzing Iowa's men's basketball schedule

I am looking forward to the season starting and although I'm not positive we are going to win a lot more games than last year, I do think we are going to be more competitive. The team should be a lot more fun to watch and May, Gatens, Payne, and Cole are a pretty good nucleus to build around. Add in Basabe, McCabe, Marble, Cartwright, and perhaps a walk on who surprises and we really have a fairly decent group of ball players. I do know that they will show up and play hard. Go Hawks!

I'm excited! I'm really looking forward to seeing the Hawks this year. We could be a little better than last year and being a little better helps you win a few more games and a few more wins generates a little more confidence and a little more confidence helps you win a few more games...

GazetteOnline.com : What's your sports fan Bucket List? Here's mine:

1. The Rose Bowl with Iowa playing. The excitement and history of the Rose Bowl speaks for itself and the really special part would be of course that Iowa is playing in it. Iowa football has been pretty successful lately by almost anyone's standards. Mention Rose Bowl though and our record and showing has been pretty dismal, actually downright awful, especially everything that I can remember. I would absolutely love to be sitting in that stadium and watching Iowa put their foot on some Pac 10 teams throat. The redemption, the catharsis, the shedding of the pain of watching all those Ronnie Harmon fumbles, seeing some no name Washington running back having a career day at our expense, and just the overall really crappy showings Iowa has had in their Rose Bowl appearances. Only one things for sure, I would have a bunch of company, and oh man, would there be a party...

2. The Final Four with Iowa playing. Hey, so I'm dreaming, but it might happen. I mean it's actually happened before. I know it's been awhile, and it might be awhile before it happens again, but who knows. The Final Four has become one of the premier sporting events in the world and I truly enjoy college basketball and watch almost every game that I can of the tournament so it would be a great trip even without the Hawks. The real excitement though is when the Hawks are involved, and if they have made it to the Final Four, there will be some truly excited Hawkeye basketball fans. When was the last time you saw that?

I haven't been to all of the great events that you have Mike but here is my take on a bucket list. 5. A World Cup in Europe. The trip alone would be great and the excitement and atmosphere would be almost without peer. All the different nations, the beer, the different cultures, the beer, you get the theme. 4. A summer or winter Olympics. I'm a big fan of both. Everybody you know is rooting for your favorite team, the USA. It doesn't even matter what sport it is. Tell me one other time that you read about or watched Ice Dancing or Synchronized Swimming? Sports and Patriotism, how does it get any better? If they had Football as a sport and Stanzi was the QB. 3. A World Series with the Cardinals playing. I've never been to a World Series game which would be cool all by itself but it would be so much better with the Cardinals playing. The excitement of seeing it in your favorite teams home park is one of the things that makes the World Series so great.

I hadn't heard that and if true than it could still turn out good for the Hawks. I read Josh's comments after the offer and they didn't sound very enthusiastic. I hope he is just being cautious with his public message. Thanks.

Thanks Scott! You have done a great job this summer reporting on the Hawks in the Prime Time league and giving your take on their progress. I truly enjoyed it. One thing though in this piece I would disagree with. You were pretty critical of Basabe when all he did was lead the league in scoring and rebounding. I understand that there is more to the game than rebounding and scoring but if you ask me that's a darn fine place for a kid to start. I was not able see a game in person but I am definitely looking forward to seeing all of the kids, especially May, Gatens, Payne, Cole, Marble, McCabe, Cartwright, and Basabe play for Iowa this season. I bet Mac and company teach all of them a few things before the season starts, maybe even help Basabe wih his defense! I sure hope Oglesby forgives Mac for the late offer and comes to Iowa. What do you think our chances are with Josh? Is it true that he outplayed Coleman at Vegas?

Great article Scott, thanks for the insights. I especially liked the "30 seconds of fear and 5 seconds of panic" quote. It will be interesting to see how this season plays out. It sounds like the sum of the parts are better this year than last.

Good article Scott, thanks. It is nice to hear that both Melsahn and Zach are playing well so far. What are your thoughts on Devyn Marble? I know it is way early for any real evaluation but some things such as athleticism should be clear. I have to admit, I'm a little excited to see how these guys mesh.
GazetteOnline.com : There's no cause for Hawkeyes to be scornful of Cyclones other than pure rivalry reasons

It has been my experience that most Iowa fans root for Iowa State when they are playing almost anyone else besides Iowa. I am not sure I can say the same for Clone fans. There was a real nasty attitude among my Clone friends and co-workers about Iowa, especially when Iowa had the big winning streak in Football going. I still think they define success as beating Iowa more so than a Hawkeye fan defines success as beating the Clones. Do Hawk fans want to beat Iowa State, of course, does the majority hope that Iowa State lands in some backwater conference, no, or at least not the people I have experience with. Unless of course, that means we will have a recruiting edge on the best Iowa born players! Good article Mike, thanks.

Wow Mike, it seems like McCaffery has really hired an experienced, smart, supporting cast. Look at this guy, Academic All-American, head coach, and as you mentioned, the very possible benefits of working as a camp counselor for Nike. Speraw, Francis, and Bowen seem to be just as strong. Add in the fact Speraw and Bowen are Alumni and this seems like a heck of a staff to back you up. I do not remember Iowa ever having this kind of experience on the basketball staff. I would be curious to hear what a (I know, way too early) concensus opinion of the Gazette sports staff is on Fran so far?
