Three Star Night Blog : Doing

Thanks, Floyd. A lot of it comes from my experience with and teaching from an old pastor of mine. I also have a friend who does all this naturally without even thinking about it, so I've had a lot of excellent examples in my life.

Thanks for checking up on me, Floyd! Most of the situations have either been dealt with or are getting better. My unbelieving grandfather is still in the hospital, but he's doing significantly better and has been moved out of the ICU. (I didn't mention it before because it was still "fresh.") Thank you for your prayers, that really means a lot.

Three Star Night Blog : My prayer life kinda sucks.

I actually pulled this question straight out of a sermon I heard because I thought it was interesting on several fronts: how do we talk with God, how do we converse with God, and what kind of friends do we have? At the end of it all, I'm just so grateful: both for God and his loving character and for the awesome friends I have.

Three Star Night Blog : Dialogue with a commenter

Thanks, Floyd. It is such an important concept that goes well beyond the scope of what the commenter was asking. Really, it goes to the core of our faith, what we believe, and how we respond. I took some time off last week to try to address these issues as well as I could, and I'm glad you think I did OK.

Three Star Night Blog : Church...Grafting? A thought experiment.

Weirdly enough, unbeknownst to me, the church I formerly attended in LA was in the process of a church merge concurrently with when I wrote this post. My church was less than 5-years-old and had a very young demographic because it was closet o a college campus. The church it merged with had been around for over 100 years and had a very established demographic, minus the young-adult population. Here, it was not a mixture of theology v. youth/ church activities --- both churches were very much on the same page theology-wise, and in fact, the "older" church had more activities because it had the resources that our "younger" church did not. However, it was a really good fit because the older generation brings a certain sort of maturity that only comes with age, and the younger generation brings a certain sort of energy that (usually) only comes with youth. The two churches decided to join the entire congregations of both churches and create a brand new third church, with a name that reflected the background of both churches. All my good friends still go to that church, and by all accounts, both the new combined leadership and the new combined laity are getting along together just fine, and it's been a success all-around. As for your comment about what each generation is looking for in a church or church service, I think that what you said is very applicable in a lot of situations, though I wouldn't necessarily say "most." It's very dependent on location, too. A different divide I've experienced is that the older generation is particular about "protecting" a certain church culture and image, while the younger generation embraces studying Biblical theology for themselves. This Time article on "New Calvinism" ranking it the third most powerful thing changing the world and this response article (ironically, one of the major fortresses of "New Calvinism" criticizing the Time article) kind of describe this second divide I'm talking about better than I'd be able to discuss in a comment.
