From the manual (abbreviated): 1. power down 2. set mode on dial 3. press reset button while powering up the system and on from there. #3 is the gotcha... :(

As a RAID 1 array is simply a mirror of each other, you should be able to pull a drive and stick into any other machine. Just to absolutely certain, I pulled a drive and stuck it in this computer. All looks good!

I see no reason why you couldn't. As the RAID setup is (in effect) transparent to the operating system, utilities such as Acronis should have no problem. Of course, I have not tested that... You could get a couple of smaller drives, but I do not think you would save that much. And $74 for the module seems quite inexpensive considering what you are getting for that $74.

narrow visioned -> narrow minded = my bad! And no offense taken. I just see the dashboard differently than you. And I certainly can not argue that WHS 2011 could have been a lot more than it is. I just hope v3 will be a much bigger leap over v2 than v2 was over v1. :)

Narrow minded? I thought I was simply explaining what the application is there for. And that is a nice idea, buy one copy of a commerical program and allow X number of people to access it at the same time. SW compnies kind of frown upon that. And I guess I do not understand why you think you cannot have all your docs in one central location (in WHS 2011) right now.

I really do not understand why you think that way. The Dashboard is an administrative tool, just like the Management Software of a Linux NAS device. As such, only an administrator should have access to either. Normal access to data on a WHS or NAS is through the Shares in Windows Explorer, for example. And yes, you are correct. A WHS, just like a NAS, is a storage server and a client backup server. You can use it to do more than that, but the main role of either is to serve data.

In my experience, only one instance of the Dashboard can be open at any given time, either on the LAN or the WAN, which means only one instance of RemoteLauncher.

We Got Served - Connecting Your Digital World : Hands On: QNAP TS-412 NAS

The official response is that opening the box would create a warranty issue, so a non-functional fan becomes a support issue to QNAP. That does not mean you cannot replace it yourself, and it most likely is a stock fan, but I cannot guarantee it.

There is no option for multiple profiles with the WHS 2011 server backup. You would have to reconfigure the backup folders for each run, which would be very labor intensive. And certainly not automated. Physical connected drives only, no network backups. The utility searches for an appropritate drive and does not give the user the ability to specifiy another computer drive. However, you do raise an interesting question (mapped drives) and I will have to check that one out.

Except for some very basic look-sees quite some time ago, I did not make use of the v1 server backup function. From what you describe, you can do essentially the same with 2011 plus backup the server. The WHS 2011 backup feature simply takes a long time to do ongoing backups, whereas SyncBack simply checks for changed and new files. Whereas a WHS 2011 backup may take hours, SyncBack does it in minutes (unless you have large changes).

That actually sounds quite appealing. CP is one of the solutions I was looking at, but I did not prefer the backup database that is not readable without CP. Other than that, it was quite nice!
