Legalize marijuana, which is the cash cow for the cartels, and remove the money from the equation. The cartels, unlike the US government, cannot operate with no money. We've tried every other option and all have failed. Try the sensible one--legalization. Create a legal market for sales and distribution with a modest tax similar to the cost of cigarettes. Allow those who want to grow their own to do so in the same manner as one can legally make beer and wine for their own consumption. Prohibit sales without a license. Placing an unreasonable huge tax on it will only keep the black market going as the cartels will just lower the cost. It's the prohibition on marijuana which is the ultimate cause for the violence. Remove the prohibition and much of the violence goes away. Keep the government vigilant on the meth, heroin, cocaine and illegal immigration. It's not the perfect answer but it's better than what is happening now. There are many colonies in the environment over and above those of the beekeepers. Our company sees about 20 every year in our little corner of the world. They aren't in bee boxes out in the field--they are inside people's homes. We have found them in the hollows between floors, inside ornamental posts, inside chimneys, inside porches, inside electrical boxes and many other places with a void and easy access. The problem comes when the homeowner calls and is getting stung and wants the bees gone. There are only two beekeepers in our area and none within 50 miles. In order to come remove the bees they want a minimum of $500. Homeowners will not spend than kind of money given they also have to pay to have the comb removed which costs another $200 or so. If you don't remove the comb and honey other bee colonies will commandeer the exiting honeycomb and the problem is there again. Pest control companies can kill the bees for a lot cheaper than the bee keepers charge to remove the bees. We would prefer to leave the bees alone for the beneficial and vital things they do. However, my family is my first responsibility and this is how I provide for them. It's has become an economic decision and rightly or wrongly eliminating the colony is the choice people make. If it's my company or some competitor, I will cash the check. Even if the Congress is retaken by the GOP in 2010, any investigations and resulting misdeeds will have to be referred to DOJ for prosecution. Holder, et al, will 1) never prosecute, 2) find some rule or reason to dismiss any improprieties discovered, 3) drag out any decision to prosecute until the statute of limitations has expired, or 4) Obama will pardon all of them (as well as everyone in his administration) upon departing the presidency.
