It's derived from the 4chan term "Drawfag". 4chan likes to put labels on a lot of people with the word fag in it. Take "Oldfag, Newfag, or Moralfag" for example. When the ponies began to take over /co/, they decided to use a less offensive term to describe their artists, namely Drawfriend. EqD picked up the term, and the rest is history.
