Baltimore Sports Report : Ravens franchise Haloti Ngata

Mark was talking about the exclusive franchise tag when referring to Manning in the quote you pointed out. The other guys you brought up are transition, or non-exclusive tags. Here is a quote from and Adam Schefter article from 2/15/11 in regards to Vick being tagged: The Eagles went so far as to give Vick the "exclusive" designation, barring him from talking with other teams. The only other player to have received the exclusive tag thus far is four-time MVP Peyton Manning by the Indianapolis Colts. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=61236...

Baltimore Sports Report : Ravens Center Matt Birk intends to play in 2011

Not sure if this is good or bad. I know Birk battled injuries last year, but I am not sure how much he has left when healthy. I guess it give the Ravens a year to groom the next center.

Baltimore Sports Report : Dallas Morning News: Polamalu tarnished Defensive Player of the Year Award

I think it just showed some of the flaws in Troy's game, and that too an extent he is somewhat of a system player in Pittsburgh. He is obviously an excellent defender and can be very disruptive, but when the Steelers are forced to drop him into coverage all game long he does not excel. Pass defense is definitely the weaker part of TP's game and it is even moreso when he has to cover a guy like Greg Jennings 1-on1, with Aaron Rodgers throwing him the ball. I tend to think that a one game scenario is not the best way to judge an awrd like DPOY and it does need to be based on regular season performance. It is also easy to be critical of TP because the guy next in line for the award forced what was the biggest TO of the game, but Matthews also looked bad a few times when he was over-persuing in run defense.

Baltimore Sports Report : In Beating Steelers, Packers Show What the Ravens Lack

You will get no disagreement from me. The staff of the Ravens shares the blame, but in watching the ability of the players that the Packers lined up agains the Steelers last night compared to talent of the Ravens, the Packers are better. Watching all the Ravens games this year, I came away with the Steelers being the most talented team they played. Last night, it appeared to me that the Packers were more talented than the Steelers. Not saying much, considering the result, but the Ravens failings are not just how they gameplan, or how aggressive they are. Just as much of it is lack of execution, which boils down to talent.

Let's not neglect the talent gap betweenthe Ravens and Packers along the o-line and the tremendous speed advantage teh GB receivers have over the Ravens. I will admit that Rodgers adn his qucik decision making make stheir line look better and it neutralized the Steeler's blitzing, but it helps to have receivers with the ability to get open in short routes as well as they do on deeper routes. I seriously think Jordy Nelso would be the Ravens fastest receiver, save Reed and Stallworth, who rarely played. Combine those things with a QB of Rodgers ability, and there are many reasons why the Pack is better than the Ravens, especially offensively.

Zach and Sadler go easy on Will T. He and other Stooler fans obviously had a traumatic weekend, which has spilled over into Monday, making them incapable of stringing together any semblance of logic. In fact, I wonder if Phil C. is the same called who called Steve Czaben this morning and insisted that the pass to Mike Wallace that ended the Steelers hopes of a comeback should not have been ruled an interception. Citing that the ball clearly hit the ground. Or he called into the Dan Patrick show and claimed that Jerome Bettis, from Detroit, should have been in the hall of fame before Deion Sanders.

Could be that Vlad got a bit worn down by the July and August heat in Texas, or maybe he just had a slump or two in those months. Either way, I thihk it would make sense for Buck to give Vlad some nights off to keep him fresh. Having Scott and Pie is also reason enough to rest Vlad against some of the tougher righties the O's will face.

Baltimore Sports Report : Final Thoughts About Vlad...For Now

Not to me. I think it comes down to adding a player who can improve the club and trying to win as many games as possible in 2011. It may all be moot like Mark and screaming CARL said, because it seems Vlad wants nothing to do with Baltimore. I just don't feel many teams, who intend to win, would not sign a productive hitter because they are worried about how it affects the progress of a couple of platoon OF'ers.

I agree Zach. There is nothing wrong with adding talent for just one year. The young players we have been told would be the future are, for the most part, in Baltimore. Why not surround them with as many good players as possible. Plus, with the injury history of the primary players in LF, CF and 1B having depth is not a bad thing. I think it would be better for the Orioles to semi-platoon LF, DH and to an extent 1B. It allows Showalter to put the best righty/lefty match-ups out there and keeps guys like Vlad, Scott, Pie and Lee fresh over the whole season. Plus, with Vlad, the O's have can have a legit bat on the bench for late game hitting. Even Adam Jones can be protected some by working Pie in as CF a few times a month.

I think we are way over-valuing Luke Scott. He is a good player, coming off a career year, who tends to do his best work against lesser competition (hence his stellar numbers against the AL Central). Luke is by not means a "legitimate clean-up hitter" for a good team and there is no gaurantee he can duplicate last season, as opposed to reverting to the streaky hitter of previous seasons. On most contenders he would be a no. 7 hitter and not necessarily a regular starter. Scott is younger than Vlad, but he did not significantly outperform Vlad last year. Vlad has a greater track record as well. And to the issue of stuting development, how many AB's was Reimold going to get this year? 200? He is not even a lock to make the OD roster. If he is talented enough to be a big league player, Vlad will not side track his career.
