/Film : Marketing Up\'s Asian-American Lead Character

So? Like I said, if someone were to create a fantasy culture influenced by western culture, does that preclude the possibility of non-whites appearing in that work? Absolutely not. Also, I wouldn't be mad if they cast the Avatar characters with Asians, my point is it doesn't matter, because the characters aren't Asian (in the biological sense), because they don't, and never did, exist.

Of for god's sake, I'm completely with you on this issue, for the most part, but stop bringing up Avatar! Those characters aren't Asian! They're not historical! The main character even looks white! Saying one particular 'race' gets exclusive rights to being depicted in a fantasy culture, simply because it resembles a historical culture made up of people of that race is god damn ridiculous. Imagine if whites said Asians and Blacks etc. were not allowed to be depicted in fantasy cultures that resemble ancient western culture, there'd be outrage! That is of course ignoring the fact no one has even tried that, but I'm not against you in saying the fact it hasn't been tried is an issue. If you want to pick a fight with a film for this issue, pick something like 21, where historical Asian characters were changed to white ones, or Prince of Persia where a Persian (a real culture/country, unlike Avatar) character is being depicted by a white person.

/Film : The Buzz: Terminator Salvation is Horrible OR a Solid Summer Action Movie

I'd like to tell you what I think, but unlike Paramount with Star Trek, the producers of Terminator have decided to wait 2 bloody weeks until they release in Australia. I wouldn't be surprised at all if piracy was strangely higher for this movie than Star Trek in Australia. Jesus Christ movie studios get your act together, we want to pay to see these movies too! That goes to you too Disney, Up in September? SEPTEMBER? Fuck you!

All I want them to do is make the story actually feel like it's taking place within 24 hours. Remember Sangala, Juma, the hearing, Emerson, Matobo, the planes colliding etc.? Yeah, they all supposedly happened the same day as what's going on now.

Sounds like it could be cool. They need to do something different for the next movies, having 3 movies all set in the future could get boring pretty quickly, without something to mix things up a bit. Whether or not it will work, well that depends on how well McG handled Salvation, and we don't know that yet.

Why? John Cho is older than Takei was when Trek started, and the rest of the cast apart from Pine and Yelchin are over 30, with Pine being 28, hardly a 'young' cast, it's in the same ballpark as the show.

I'm starting to worry about this movie. It seems like they're using the success of the last one to justify stuffing as many characters and as many stars into the film as possible. I just hope the writer is good enough to make this work, it could turn into a real big mess.

The Marc Foster/Bond thing is interesting given the negative reaction to Quantum of Solace. Although I'd personally be interested in seeing him try again, especially since I think most of the problems come from the script and the influence of Dan Bradley (from Bourne movies). The script because it abandoned plot in favour of action, and Bradley for making the action incomprehensible.

Sure, a truthful and honest look at the Kennedys would be interesting, but this is obviously not going to be it. If they're admitting to this much bias, imagine what we're going to actually get. Highlighting and going after the most negative aspects of a subject isn't truthful and honest. Just because popular perception of someone is very high, probably disproportionate to what is deserved, doesn't mean the complete opposite is any better.

The trailer obviously aired in Australia (based on the Voice Over) and we have an incredibly annoying tendency to freak out over anything that has anything to do with us. Even if it doesn't* (non of the Battles mentioned in Peter's synopsis have anything to do with Australia). *See Sam Worthington/Batman story.

/Film : Watchmen - What Did You Think?

What did you think about the movie? Loved it. Did it live up to your expectations? Exceeded. What did you love? What did you hate? I loved everything about the Dr Manhatten character, especially the flashback that gave his backstory. I think choosing to go with Billy Crudup's regular voice was a great decision. Didn't 'hate' much. My biggest problem is that I don't think the world/alternative history was very well established. Apart from the make-up on the guy that played Nixon. Awful. Was it faithful enough or too faithful? Didn't read the novel. If you didn’t read the graphic novel, did you understand everything? I understood everything fine. Although the ending and the motivation behind it could have been articulated better. Not 100% sure I would have understood it had I not read/heard about the ending beforehand. Should it have been shorter? Or are you still excited for the three hour and 20 minute ultimate cut of the movie? I think it was the perfect length, enough time to establish characters etc. but not too long that anything felt like a waste of time. I hate it when movies are cut short just to 'focus on the plot'. Movies need a little extra time just to explore the characters/world of the story, and sacrificing that just so we can get to the ending quicker is a major problem with movies these days. Not sure I'd want a longer cut. I'm interested to see the difference in reactions between those that read the novel and those that didn't, being someone who didn't read it and enjoyed the movie. Not sure what Alan Moore was on about, I think the story (or what of it made it into the film) was perfectly well suited to film.

Saw this in front of Watchmen today. Which is a pleasant surprise since new up-to-date trailers in front of movies are very very rare in Australia these days. I love the scale presented in the trailer, can't wait for the movie, probably my most anticipated blockbuster of '08 and I'm not really a Trek fan.
