Mark Watches : Mark Watches 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer': S02E20 - Go Fish

So yeah, I was over the moon when Mark revealed that he was going to be reviewing Buffy, so when the reviews finally started to arrive I commited myself to becoming much more active and posting with greater frequency. That...didn't really pan out. I tried it for a couple of days, and found myself spending HOURS idly scanning through the comments section, and it completely drained my productivity. So, although I was having fun, I resolved to remove myself from commenting, at least until my coursework deadlines lightened a little. But if anything, my deadlines are even stricter at this point, and even at the risk of becoming overworked, I'm back. Because...Well, I suppose it's because I have very little self-restraint :) On that note though, this isn't exactly the greatest episode for me to have renewed my ...watchingness for, although in its defense, it DOES serve to answer one of the most pressing questions raised by the most recent season of Doctor Who. "Do fish have fingers?" They do in Sunnydale.

Hmm, aside from the actually pretty positive Xander moments, I choose to believe that this episode exists in its own little existence, inhabited only by the bizarre and outrageous. Such as this thing (Sorry, ust looking for an excuse to share this abomination.)

Stephanie Meyer, what the fuck have you wrought? I mean, "Twilight" maybe a horrifically written, racist, mysogenistic nightmare, but hey! At least the whole "vampire/human highschool romance" thing is original, right? LOL NO. So yeah, not gonna lie, my first impression of Angel pretty much boiled down to "Jesus, look at this fucking proto-Edward". Oh, he hangs out in the shadows? Broods and offers unnecessarily cryptic advice? Looks to go through and ehole tub of hairgel every evening? Yeah, VAMPIRE VAMPIRE VAMPIRE. But, beyond the outward similarities and the bare bones of the situation, the similarities (thankfully) fade away. And whilst I'd love to run through all the ways in which this show is already doing things SO much better than those fucking books, I'll instead attempt to sum things up in three points. 1. Upon learning that Angel is a vampire, Buffy DOES NOT FUCK AROUND. She reacts with understandable revulsion and, when she thinks he might have endangered someone close to her, she puts aside all personal feelings- not an easy thing for a teenager in any situation - and readies herself to kill him. 2. Angel is both blessed, and cursed, with a soul. It clearly defines and seperates him from the other vampires we've seen so far. He isn't kept alive or let off the hook because he's attractive, rich, sparkly, etc. His existence is defined by his regrets. He fights against his instincts and his very nature- and unlike the goddamn Cullens- he doesn't see this as being enough to let him live free of responsibility or punishment. Not only does he fight against himself, he fights against his his whole species. 3. VAMPIRES. WITH. HANDGUNS. VAMPIRES WITH FUCKING HANDGUNS! I love this show.

So then, Witches. Even after years of Harry Potter obsession, I'm still automatically reminded of "The worst witch" It was some super-obscure program they showed on ITV when I about 5 or 6, and I loved it to death. Even before I knew Harry potter was a thing, I'd be pretending to fly around on broomsticks and learn magic. And most importantly, even though I was super conscious that I was a boy watching what what ostensibly a "girl's show", I just didn't give a fuck! I wanted to be best friends with Mildred and the other girls, hang out and make potions and giggle and stuff. If I could have gotten my hands on a witch costume at that age, you bet your collective asses I would've worn the hell out of it :) Come to think of it, "The Worst Witch" was probably the first form of anything that I was a fan of, outside of machinery (My grampa would take me on walks to see the machines at the pit- ie "mine" that he used to work at and it was WONDERFUL). And all anyone else ever seems to remember of it is the horrific tv movie involving Tim Curry(!!!) singing the worst lyrics in the history of history. [youtube PUhuPn8_d0Q http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUhuPn8_d0Q youtube] God, just look at that cape. The whole thing is a 50/50 blend of SWAG and nightmarish. Nightflairish! ...Sorry, I'll put the portmanteaus away for now.

Truth be told, the first time I watched this opening two-parter, I didn't really care for it all that much. Until Giles' final line. It was around two hours of me going "Eh... it's okay, but it's not exactly up to Firefly standard." Then, after all the dark-tunnel-chases and blood sacrifice nonsense, the happy, upbeat music kicked in and I was sort of expecting the "everything's back to normal JUST LIKE MAGIC" stuff, and I was mostly okay with it, even if it kinda made it seem like everyone had been on a field trip to Lake Laogai (apologies for the sort-of injoke new Mark Watches fans). I was all set to watch the rest of the series, but couldn't help feeling a little let down. Then Anthony Stewart Head's total deadpan delivery made me laugh like hell, and I found myself re-assesing everything I had set myself up to think. I watched both episodes again, and found, to my surprise, that I thought they were excellent. Weird, huh? On an unrelated note, how do you guys feel about refering to Mark Watches fans as "Watchers" from now on? Seems appropriate :)

A little over two years ago, on my sixteenth birthday, I discovered Joss Whedon's writing for the first time. Up until then, it hadn't been the greatest day. I'd had a pounding headache, and my vision decided to say "fuck you!" to working properly, so I was close to inexplicably blind from around 3pm to 7. Luckily, I managed to shake it off, and the very first thing I did after waking up- yes, prior to getting even slightly dressed, was open up my most-looked-forward-to present. Firefly. I was hooked within moments, I'm pretty sure I watched the whole series within a couple of days, and I've rewatched countless times since then. Being something of a few years late to the party, I bemoaned its premature cancellation privately and moved on. Then around half a year later I found a boxset of Buffy in some store or other, and knowing close to nothing about the show I was quick to dismiss it. Until I recognised Whedon's named on the back of the case and practically flew across to the checkout, mentally screaming "TAKE MY MONEY JUST LET ME WATCH IT NOW". It took me a while to get into, sure. It wasn't as immediately satisfying as firefly, and the whole "highschool" thing weirded me out and brought back "saved by the bell" memories I'd attempted to repress. But I fell in love with it all the same and, as such, completely forgot to buy the second season. I work in mysterious and contradictory ways. Flash-forward two or three months. It was summer, and my dad had recently left us for my (at the time) best friend's mother. I was in a pretty bad place, and I'm ashamed to admit that I found seasons two and three on Itunes, and used his credit card details to download them mostly out of spite. But that's not the important part- what is important is that it began a period of intense T.V watching that I doubt I'll ever equal. I was watching 7 or 8 episodes at a time, night after night. I barely stopped until I finished the whole show, then promptly re-watched it all over with my little sister. It was a much-needed distraction. So, cutting to the point of all that rambling, what I'm trying to get at is that I've never been as entranced by any other series as I was by Buffy. I'll be one of the first to admit that it's far from perfect, but then very few things are. And when it's at its best, it's about as close as anything I've ever seen. Much as I loved finally being able to post along with BSG, I wasn't exactly the most active member of the Mark Does Stuff community. But if anything can change that, it's Buffy. I look forward to finding things to comment on :) Hope you all enjoy the ride as much as I expect to. ^The flickering colours represent my excitement.
