WMPoweruser.com : Windows Phone 7’s Future… JailBreaking

Then call it another disadvantage of WP7. I want control over what goes on my file system where. What If I wanted to store some things on one sd card and some things on another? What if I want to remove my SD card to share files? Right now I use an SE X1, but have another phone for when I got out somewhere that I'd rather not bring my nice phone. Simply swap SIM card and take out SD card and put it in my other phone so my music and important files still come with me. I also currently enjoy plugging in my phone to a comp and getting USB mass storage access to it. Easy to share files. None of this possible with WP7. The SD card is now basically a part of the phone. Take it out and you have no idea what files/datastores you are removing? All WM needed was a rewritten UI. Two steps forward, 10 steps back. Goodbye microsoft iphone, hello Android. Shame, cause I like all other MS products (exchange, windows, office, ect) and the integration was nice. With Android I will need third party software to integrate with exchange as well as WM did. Small price to pay for all the benefits of Android.

WMPoweruser.com : Interview with Microsoft – what are your questions?

Some of these are posted before but: 1.) Can apps be installed/run outside of marketplace? Will devs have to pay to get apps into marketplace, even free ones 2.) Full multitasking? Copy/paste support? 3.) Can we access file system? Use SD card as mass storage? load whatever files we want to? So basically is it still an open useful OS or is it another iphone clone?

WMPoweruser.com : TouchXperience demo possibly the coolest interface you ever saw

I agree some features are over the top (for instance, animated backgrounds everywhere might waste battery), but the thing is customizable. That is the beauty. Disable what you dont want. There are several key features of this app that I cant wait to use. Use as a start menu (because the start menu for every version of WM including 6.5 just plain sucks), use as a home screen (because the home screen of every version of WM including 6.5 just plain sucks; and I dont like tf3d either), use as a task manager, media player, and maybe some of the other parts depending on what it can do. I can't wait to get a copy and slip the author a hefty donation.

WMPoweruser.com : MS says no to 3rd party UI in WM7?

And just because OEMs cant write there own UI doesnt mean they cant modify the stock one. For instance, if the WM7 homescreen ends up being a widgets type home screen a la android (which I would like) HTC can still add their own widgets. They just cant replace the whole home screen with their own system. I am not advocating a complete removal of customization. Just limited OEM customization. Developers should still run wild.

WMPoweruser.com : MS says no to 3rd party UI in WM7?

I think what this means is that MS will not allow OEMs to make their own UI's. With the flexibility of the OS it would be pretty impossible to make replacing the default UI impossible (unless they plan on sand boxing the whole OS-app architecture which would indeed be a disaster). I think this is very good. As long as MS's default UI is a good one. Better than both Titanium and TF3D (and I think both could use improvement). There needs to be consistency with WM devices. Right now a customer can expect a very different experience depending on what brand WM device they buy. There is no confidence in the OS itself. The software should not be a deciding factor when choosing a WM device. Any device running WM should deliver the same experience. It should be the hardware you are choosing. This should be good for devs too. As long as it is still possible to modify the OS and UI behavior devs can keep selling programs like wisbar. It should be easier too, because devs wont have to worry about what OEM software will interfere. Consistency in an OS is good for everyone.

WMPoweruser.com : HD2 Battery Life

To me this device a) is too big, b) has no kb, and c) lacks buttons. But thats ok. HTC has a product in their lineup for folks like me. The TP2.. if only they would stop deleting buttons!!! I have and have loved my X1 but my friend recently got a TP2 and it is pretty nice. Perfect size, huge (for the size of the phone) flush mounted screen, ect. But I cant live without a Dpad!!! How am I supposed to skip tracks and adjust volume while driving? Dpads are so useful for so many things. HTC please listen. Give me a TP2 with snapdragon, a real dpad (and no optical pad BS either), make sure the keyboard has a ctrl key, and give it a multitouch capacitive screen. Keep the 3.5mm jack pls. I promise I will buy it.

WMPoweruser.com : Sony Ericsson Xperia X2

Phones are doing away with buttons and it saddens me. No SE, an optical pad is no substitute for a dpad. You just can match the accuracy and convenience of buttons. That is the one reason I like the X1 over the TP2. And now that reason is gone. Not to mention this processor is sh!t. fail.

WMPoweruser.com : Microsoft confirms Windows Mobile 7 announcement for March 2010

Just to comment Jos, as I was explaining earlier, you *can* change the whole philosophy of how you get work done on the OS simply by rewriting the shell. Both WM and ZuneHD run WinCE (Zune has a newer version of CE, but that makes no difference; that is internal workings). I think you would agree that they have completely different UI paradigms. I agree that the whole philosophy of how the user interacts with WM needs a change. And to make that change all you need is a new shell. No need to waste time rewriting kernels, memory management, process/thread management, ect. That is all done and done well in CE 7. A new shell is what is needed and should be exactly what comes in WM7.

Parrotlover, when people say WM needs to be completely rewritten, they really do just mean the UI layer. Anyone who knows how windows is designed and what CE is know that rewriting the whole OS is not only absurd, its absurdly unnecessary. You are right, CE is a great and very powerful platform. It is indeed the shell that everyone wants to see rewritten. The shell is all you as the user see. Rewrite the shell and for all the user knows it is a completely new OS. Just look at this picture: http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=6725 Still a ZuneHD. Same OS. Just a different shell.

WMPoweruser.com : Opera Mobile 10 beta now out for Symbian, will come to Windows Mobile soon too

Yes but the beta versions do not really work well. I am not talking about the versions pirated from HTC devices (yes, they are pirated). I mean the ones they actually release to the public for download. Dont get me wrong, I use them too. I am not putting anyone down for using them. My point though is that they have not released a finished product to end users for a long time, free or otherwise. 9.7 beta is pretty good and I use that but it still has unfinished features. I agree with Foamy though. I dont think they will charge again. You can make much more of OEM licensing.

On the other hand MS needs to make it easier for devs to make attractive UIs. Right now if you want to make a good looking app you have to do everything from scratch. I wouldnt blame the devs completely for this. MS's improvements in 6.5 (UI wise) only go as deep as the today screen.

WMPoweruser.com : Angry developer speaks out against Microsoft, Marketplace

No arguments that it is ugly. I thought he meant he doesnt miss the fact that 3rd parties could write plug ins. And I don't think it is a good thing that every OEM writes its own interface. Why license WM if you have to finish writing the UI yourself? MS should ship a good experience so that all OEMs need to do is package and sell it. The fact that the UX varies widely from OEM to OEM is very bad IMO. The needs to be consistency in the platform so that when a customer buys a WM phone they know what to expect.
