IronBrandon : Where have I been?

Glad you are back and hope things are going well. I look forward to hearing more of your perspective on so many different things and your passion for the sport. If you get a chance, I would love to hear/read your take on this year's Boston Marathon and all that surrounded your experiences there, when you are ready. - Jay

I agree. I would never underestimate the the potential of the human spirit. However as many runners have painfully discovered, success favors the prepared body (to extend the Louis Pasteur observation that "Chance favors only the prepared mind").

Great show, continue to enjoy it greatly. When you went on your rant, Stevie, one thing kept going through my head: If all your body knows are 10Ks, then you will get very good at that distance....and that is all. As you and Allan so nicely pointed out, the endurance training the body needs to complete the half-marathon is significantly greater than that for a 10K. Without at least approaching the distance (though I still respectfully contend that the body needs the experience of the full distance in training), the body will not know how to respond when pushed, and may ultimately crash.

Great show again Brandon. Hope you and your family make it back to NYC without too many troubles. As a possible podcast topic, I would love to hear your impressions of the running/swimming/biking scene, climate and groups in the Milwaukee area, and possibly contrasting it to your general experiences in NYC? Just a thought.....

Allan and Stevie, Great podcast again, and thought I would mention one other plan for the beginner runner. It is the Couch-2-5K plan from Runner's World. I think that it has taken on a life of it's own, but I highly recommend it for those starting from scratch: http://www.c25k.com/ Thanks again, Jay

That is interesting, and I have often seen training plans end with a long run that is less than the full race distance; still, I fail to understand the rationale and have not seen anything that explains this common practice with training schedules. If anyone has any info on the reason for the sub-race distance longest run, I would love to see it. I don't want to knock any given plan, I just was wondering about the basis. Thanks for the links! Jay

Just curious about one thing. Stevie mentioned that you should "never run the distance until the race." Why not? As long as the incremental increases of distances during training are not more than the "10% a week" advice, why not experience the entire distance rather than assuming that if you can go 11, you can go 13? I would think it better for your body to 'know' the distance rather than risking a bonk at mile 12, as it were. Thanks, Jay
