IMO what Rush is doing is trying to keep Romney from winning the nomination too easily. Romney needs to be pushed/pulled a bit further to the right, and then he needs to be seen as conservative enough so that there is no third-party challenger. So, I think Rush is not bashing Romney, because he sees Romney as almost inevitable. He just wants to make sure it's not so easy that Romney thinks he can start running towards the center -- as that would piss off conservatives and make it likely that someone would run an independent campaign to the right of Romney. Romney can beat Obama, easily, if there are no other serious candidates on the ballot.
