I don't look Arab--there is no chance I will be mistaken for someone's possible daughter or sister. This could come from the fact that I live in a rural community--when I go to Amman, I usually don't get harassed. I wear a fake wedding ring to deter shebab. I always wear sunglasses when outside to avoid eye contact. Fortunately, I've made friends with enough doucan owners in my area that I can get them to help me if I have a really persistent sheb bothering me, but that's not always the case. I have a recurring nightmare about a sheb setting my hair on fire on the bus, although it hasn't happened yet. When I walk with a Jordanian woman, the verbal harassment is usually in English, otherwise they usually use Arabic. Most women are shocked when I tell them how the shebab act, which then lets me lead them into a conversation about raising their sons to respect women. Hopefully the next generation will be at least a little bit better. I think Jordan is in a really tough position, since it's covering most of Israel's border, is supporting most of the Palestinian refugees, and wasn't a rich country to start with. I don't know how much more the government could realistically do. I think more responsibility lies on the US government to stop giving money to Israel as long as settlements and human-rights abuses continue. the US government as a whole (I know about the Zionist lobby, etc) isn't beholden to Israel because, unlike most bordering countries, it's not afraid of Israel's military strength. the Jordanian government can't afford to start anything with Israel because Jordan would lose the war.
