Songcrafting : Creating Change, One Gay At A Time

Oh those conservatives. So level-headed. I still don’t get it though. I don’t get the fear or intolerance. Why can’t we all just accept each other for who we are? Forget labels, and assumptions, and judgment. Marriage is between two loving people. That’s what I’ve always believed, and that’s what I will always believe. Again, sorry for the multiple posts. I tend to rant...

Once I dismissed his idea that my friend is overly sexual, he went on to a different argument against homosexuality. “Humanity will die out.” Ah yes. If we allow gay marriage, all human race will end as we know it. “Everyone will turn gay. They’ll be influenced.” I love how that argument only works one way. We’ve been surrounded by heterosexual media images forever, and yet people are still coming out. So why does the influence only go one way? So to sum up this guy’s arguments: If gay marriage becomes legal, everyone will become gay, and having crazy gay sex with everyone else, and, since no one will reproduce, the human race will die.

So while I was in DC, I struck up a conversation with a guy my age who was so shocked to hear that one of my good friends was a lesbian. “Do you feel comfortable around her?” he asked. “Of course. She’s a friend,” was my reply. “But isn’t it weird?” “Why?” “I mean, doesn’t she, like…” I knew where this was going. “No. She doesn’t have sex with everything in a skirt.” It’s a terrible misconception. Many people think that if you’re gay, you’re automatically sex-craved. I’m not sure why people have this assumption. Last time I checked, it’s important to meet someone before making assumptions about them.

Maybe it’s my liberal upbringing, but I’ve never understood the “controversy.” Granted, I’m from manhattan, and homosexuality is just another fact of life. No one really cares. We never had debates in high school about whether it was right or wrong. It wasn’t until my junior year in high school, when I spent a week in Washington DC on this “youth leadership” program, that I started to see that there was, in fact (for some inexplicable reason) a debate going on about homosexuality. I knew the debate existed, but I had never actually met anyone who felt differently than me.
