Atheist Revolution : News Corp and GE CEOs Put End to Olbermann-O\'Reilly Feud

Agreed, vjack. I watch Olbermann and Maddow, but once I move (very soon), I'm not getting cable. I won't have time for it, and honestly, all I really watch regularly is the news. I'm actually looking forward to having to look for new, better news outlets...we'll see how that goes...

Atheist Revolution : Look Who\'s Defending Separation of Church and State Now

Wait a second...were all the links to all the churches removed from the website, or just the gay-friendly ones that the state had recently put up? It's only a victory for the separation of church and state if all the links were removed--it's a victory for faith-fueled bigotry and a failure of separation of church and state if any links to churches remained. The headline says "Conn. state Web site removes church links," but the article says "Links to churches that welcome gay members have been removed from a Connecticut state government Web site," and says nothing about removing all of the church-related links. In fact, according to the DoC&F spokesperson, "questions of separation of church and state did come into play" with the links to "open and affirming churches." By "open & affirming," I'm assuming they mean "gay-friendly." So, what---there's no problem with the separation of church and state with those bigoted-shithead church links? Am I missing something?

Atheist Revolution : Christian Extremism in America: The Family

I've watched Maddow's coverage of this all last week, and when I saw she was still hammering away at it this week, I couldn't help myself no longer and ordered the Sharlet book. I figured, if I'm going to be pissed off over bits and pieces, I may as well know the whole deal.

I have a terrible feeling this is going to end up looking like "See the little kids clashing with their parents just for the sake of doing so and not because they have a well-thought out, perfectly acceptable worldview." I mean, unless their parents are the nutbag Warrior for Jesus, or You're-Not-Getting-Any-Christmas-Presents!! types, I think these kids will get short-shrifted in this.

Atheist Revolution : Right-Wing Hate

I'm seeing a few comments here about taking the rights of free speech away from these whack jobs, but I fail to see how vjack called for that. If you're talking about the Fairness Doctrine recently being bandied about again, that's not taking away free speech either. It would just ensure fair and even-handed treatment of both (note: not all, unfortunately) parties. I think the Doctrine probably needs some re-working, maybe some updating, but all in all, I don't know if I'm against it. With the way the media's treatment of politics as more a sport than something that determines the direction we go as a country, I sadly think some policing might be in order, so long as it doesn't infringe of freedom of the press or free speech. I don't see how this would do either.

Atheist Revolution : Plane Crash in Buffalo

That's very Christian of you--wishing death on people. Wow. It's clear that no one here is speaking badly about the victims of the crash, nor their families. We are discussing some peoples' strange and, to us, illogical way of processing grief and tragedy. This is but one example of many, many incidents of tragedy being somehow justified by what we see as a pretty cruel and petty god. Or, at the very least, a picky one: these people die, these people get to live. Hey, it's not us determining who lives and dies. It's not us who are telling the families of the deceased that their loved ones were somehow 'bad' people and deserved death. That's your god.

See, this is why I went ahead and allowed myself to be very excited about Obama mentioning non-believers in the inauguration speech. It's rough out there, and there is an overwhelming amount of work to be done. If I have to accept that I will die without complete acceptance of my belief system and respect for my views and rights (this will not happen in my lifetime), then I have to grab a hold of these positive moments and ride the hell out of them to keep any momentum going, or else I will fall into a rut and do nothing. Glass half full, vjack. We have to keep looking at it like that. =)

Atheist Revolution : In Defense of Congressman Diaz-Balart

I think that we all too often read too much into statements--and this leads to a whole lot of ridiculousness (how about any exchange, direct or indirect, between Clinton and Obama during the campaign? The media used everything and anything to paint an ugly, personal war between them) That said, however, words are important, and exactly what we mean by them is important. I'm afraid I do read Diaz-Balart's statement as saying that atheism is (and, therefore atheists are) damaging and evil--#3 bullet-point of your examples of bigotry--and thus is does sound a bit bigoted to me. It's like Christians loving the sinner but hating the sin. In the case of homosexuality, you can't work to take rights away from people, and demonize people, while at the same time saying that you love them. Diaz-Balart can't be saying that atheism is damaging and evil without also saying that atheists are. That argument has never flown with me. We can say we dislike Christianity but like Christians. Yes, there are individual Christians I like--but in order to do this, I have to actively separate them from their Christianity. But, generally, I feel the same way as Dawkins--that moderate, everyday Christians make fundamentalism and extremism possible...they are enablers. I know I sound horrible, and trust me, it's something I'm loath to admit, but there it is. I'm sure if Diaz-Balart met some atheists and actively separated us from our atheism, he might think we're pretty swell, but if I'm just going on this statement, I would have to say that he's not too fond of us in general.
