GazetteOnline.com : Hlas column: Cyclones were pushed, but pushed back harder

Congrats to ISU on a solid win. Football in Iowa is better all around when State and UNI are competitive. Could be a great battle next Saturday.

GazetteOnline.com : Hlas column: For Hawkeyes, being No. 9 is nice, but not necessarily noteworthy

Some teams will be ranked mainly because of their "name." Teams like Ohio St., Alabama, Florida, Notre Dame, etc, will get a favorable nod because of past success. As abysmal as Michigan has been the last two years. I'm surprised someone doesn't have them in their top 25.

GazetteOnline.com : Even for All-Pros like Dallas Clark and Bob Sanders, the NFL is a tough business

Sports Illustrated had a write-up probably 5 or 10 years ago on the lingering effects of pro football injuries - 40 year olds with mangled hands, arthritic knees, using canes to help them walk. The human body can only take so much abuse.

GazetteOnline.com : A Michigan-Alabama football game in Dallas in 2012?

Yeah, like it or not, that's the trend. More and more money being spent on coaches and facilities, more pressure to win, more conferences expanding for more money. I'd like to see the university presidents and NCAA put some brakes on all this, but I'm not sure how. Regarding Michigan, unless they can get better in a hurry, Alabama will use them for cannon fodder. Hardly anybody up here is sold on Rich Rod being the answer. And with Iowa, Wisconsin, MSU, Purdue, etc, all looking to be better this year, it could be a long year for the Wolverines. For someone who has heard plenty of "We've got the biggest stadium, the greatest fight song, the winningest program," ad nauseum, the last two years have been a joy to behold.

GazetteOnline.com : What do you think will be the hardest game to win for Iowa's football team in 2010?

Living up here, MSU hasn't forgotten the last second loss to Iowa. It's one of several games they feel they let get away, so, yes, I would expect a tough battle from Sparty. Ohio State will be very hard to beat as usual, but the game that concerns me is Penn St. I know the Hawks have owned them in recent years, and that's what worries me. I think the Nittany Lions are really, really tired of hearing that they can't beat Iowa.

I remember that loss to Northwestern in '06. That was when Kirk Ferentz made the "we played like a bunch of fat cats" comment. Buffalomo is right in that the really bad games are ones where the Hawks had the better talent but played poorly.

Yes, and this occurred to me after I wrote my previous post: These pro teams have no problem dumping players if they feel they aren't producing. We've all read stories of how guys are told to clean out their lockers when the NFL trims down to 45 players. There's no loyalty or sympathy there. You're basically treated like a commodity. It just so happens that some "commodities" have a lot more value!

I just don't get all the uproar and anger over LeBron leaving. It's a free country, isn't it? Millions of people change jobs every year. Lebron gave Cleveland seven years. If he wants to move on, it's his business. And some of these talking heads on TV wailing about how LeBron "betrayed" Cleveland - they would never change jobs to advance their careers?

I have to agree with their basic premise. This is SUPPOSED to be about student athletes and higher education, isn't it? I've said it before, at what point do we realize that spending on college sports is over the top? When they have gold plated locker rooms? Private jets and limos for the coaches to ride in? The whole conference realignment thing last week was focused on who could deliver more TV money. Maybe we can restore some sanity to it if we reward schools more for how they are actually doing in the classroom.

GazetteOnline.com : Hlas column: Saving their seat at the Big 12 table saves Cyclones' athletics

Well, Iowa did give the world Herbert Hoover. Anyway, a report on ESPN's Big 12 Blog says that both the U. of Texas president and A.D. didn't want the Nebraska/Colorado buyout money, and they didn't think the other schools should take it either. A goodwill gesture, perhaps. They said the money should go to a special conference fund to be used at a later date. (Maybe to build a big fence around the conference to prevent further raids.)

No word on the Izzo watch yet. He is really admired and respected here, much like Bo Schembechler was. I'm not sure if he would just like a change, or if he is fed up with recruiting kids. People say that he loves teaching & coaching the fundamentals of b-ball, and that's why a lot of people would be surprised if he would go. But would putting up with the NBA egos be any better? We've all heard about the money, but I always thought if you're making several million a year already, does a few million more really matter?

This is the first time I've written a post (above) where I feel like I should apologize for it. :-) I think the Iowa - Nebraska series will be a great one, and one where the Hawks can hold their own. But I will miss seeing some of those great OU - Nebraska clashes, as well as classic games they had against Colorado (like when security kicked CU students out) and the tipped/kicked ball for a TD against Mizzou. But it seems like the focus on money is opening up a bigger can of worms. These conference shifts remind me of some of the Wall Street raids and corporate takeovers that gave us Michael Milken, Goldman Sachs, Enron, and all that mess. The money is greater, and so is the pressure to win (or at least get into a conference that does.) Look at what happened to USC last week. Michigan is in trouble with the NCAA for the first time. And I still haven't forgotten how the BTN took the games off of over-the-air TV before they made a deal with the cable networks, leaving fans out in the cold in '07 - '08. So, the story that the FedEx CEO is trying to buy Memphis' way into a BCS league doesn't really surprise me. I mean, the road we've traveled down in college sports is covered with money. You reap what you sow, right? Just wanted to explain my previous post.

I don't know why you think it's incredible, Mike. Let's face it - college sports is all about the money now. Those who have the money will do whatever they can to try and get what they want. Come on - why did Nebraska get invited in to the Big Ten? Because of football money. The suits at the Big Ten Office can yak all they want about academics and "the right fit," but the real reason is the BTN, and the money.
