These things don't just happen during the school year, they happen during the summer too, and often-times at the expense of the teacher. Don't forget, that school isn't popular or cool with the students and show no interest or motivation in their studies, thus forcing educators to attempt (futilely) to spend even more time trying to figure out how to strike a nerve with the students to get them to want to learn. Oh, but wait... if the students don't learn anything we immediately blame our school systems and not the family's responsible for the well-being and upbringing of these children. Fingers get pointed at the school for not doing their job, when most of the time it's the parents not doing theirs! Also, the wages you mention are in no way an introductory wage... most teachers start right around $30k a year, which is below the national average wage ($50k). These teachers making $50k a year are likely the ones near retirement, and they have every right to fight for what they were promised by our government!
