I was beginning to worry as there hadn’t been a “culture war” article on ConHome all day

Given the stresses facing MPs this week it is perhaps fortunate that the bars within the Parliamentary Estate are exempt from the 10pm curfew.

Mr Cummings was found in contempt of Parliament

As I said in my original reply, Mr Cummings drew our attention to the fact that the lockdown wasn’t as draconian as his spokesman had led us to believe.

Mr Cummings demonstrated that the lockdown did not apply in certain extenuating circumstances, and furthermore he allowed the population to take a wide interpretation as to whether the lockdown rules were appropriate.

Mr Cummings’ decision not to resign gave the green light for we little people to interpret the rules to minimise personal inconvenience.

I’m surprised that you’re surprised.

If you’ll recall, the lockdown was observed fairly scrupulously at first. It was only when Mr Cummings informed us that there were previously unknown exemptions that things began to break down.

You might also recall that at the time people warned that this would effectively mark the end of mass observance of the rules, which is why Mr Cummings had to resign.

There are other broadcasters.

It’s known as “market forces”, and I’m old enough to remember a time when Conservatives were in favour of letting the market decide.

“ BoJo is putting his old mates from his days in journalism in charge of the BBC. Nothing wrong with that...”

Quite so. Who cares about appointing anyone who is actually any good at the job as long as they believe in Brexit? After all, the makeup of Mr Cummings’ Cabinet is proof that such an approach is extremely effective.

Given that the selection process for both roles hasn’t even begun this is just another Trumpian effort to deflect attention away from Covid and Brexit (or more accurately Brexit and Covid.) If either or both of these roles are filled without due process there are bound to be legal challenges.

Besides, I’m quite sure that if Sir Charles is appointed then in a year’s time this site will be lamenting that he’d “gone native”. Similarly Mr Dacre would be spending his time presiding over broadband allocations and other arcane matters, which could be a challenge for someone who famously never had a computer at his desk.

By now Mr Cummings is well known for giving jobs to the boys so neither of these proposed appointments should be a surprise.

Mr Cummings has already set a precedent whereby any Conservative MPs who defy a three line whip are expelled from the Party. Should we expect these potential rebels to be treated the same?
