I'm surprised they haven't snapped up Jason, given his commitment to free speech. He'd fit right in there.

The Wild Hunt : Quick Notes: Asylum From Witch-Hunts, Vandalism in Alaska, and Sarah Palin

I have to disagree. Kennedy may have had brains but many times he didn't use them. He certainly didn't have balls. Anyone can give a good speech. He got his ass handed to him by the Bay of Pigs incident. When it came to the civil rights movement Kennedy was a no show. He was out maneuvered by the Soviets during the Cuban missile crisis. Khrushchev proved himself to be the more adept politician and was responsible for pulling the world back from the closest it's come to nuclear war. We lionize Kennedy just because he died tragically and ignore his many failures.

But that the thing. When one group advances their demand civil rights, it tends to encourage others to also advance their demands. A domino theory that works.

Gee, Robin, that sounds like the way a whole bunch of people end up doing when their family gathers together to celebrate Christmas. Mission accomplished. ;-) "and said that he didn't come to bring peace, but "a sword"- and to set father against son, and mother against daughter, and brother against brother."

The Wild Hunt : Fascists vs Muslim Immigrants in Athens?

It's important the remember that Greece was under a military dictatorship from 1967 to 1974. The citizens have never really trusted the government to operate on their behalf or in their best interest ever since.

Why do you think this has anything to do with Pagan religion? The Greeks waged a hard fought decade long war to regain their independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1821-30. For them that's practically yesterday. Since the fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453, the Greeks had been resisting the Ottomans. They know what it was like being under the thumb of the Muslims. They have damned good reasons not wanting to experience it again.

Funny that they call it 'Resisting the Green Dragon.' I wonder if they're aware that Green Dragon is also the name of a tincture made by leaching THC out of the buds, leaves, or stems of the cannabis plant in a high-proof alcohol.

I've unfortunately got to disagree with you here. Pagans might have had an awareness of the natural world around them but certainly weren't environmentalists or practitioners of conservation. As I mentioned above, our forefathers destroyed their local environment and then moved on. What Christianity brought was the idea that we had a mandate from God to do so. That is what has accelerated the destruction we've been able to cause. You are correct that Christians and Muslims are our enemies as well as being the enemies of truth, enemies of women, enemies of the wholeness of things, and enemies of the ancestors, as you so eloquently put it. As long as they see themselves as the purveyors of the 'only true way' and as such, have the right and obligation to force that on the rest of us, they will continue to be an enemy that needs to be vanquished and resigned to the dustbin of history. Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war

And what the heck would these 'planet friendly tenets of Paganism ' that we should return to be? It's a scientific fact that humans pretty much destroyed their local environment and then moved on. The awakening that we were doing serious damage to the planet and destroying our ecosystem is barely a half century old.

Think consenting minors. We try minors as adults for crimes way under the age we legally define the age of consent. They they are held responsible for those decisions, then why aren't they responsible for decisions regarding sex? That's the crux of groups that advocate for reducing the age way below what it is now. You and I find it disturbing. They don't. Look at the cases in the 1990s of female teachers having relationships with underage male students who it seems consented to the relationships. Christians, in many cases, find our religion just as disturbing and obscene as we see these relationships. Christians also, in many cases, find same sex relationships just as disturbing and obscene. As groups such as us, demand rights to religious and sexual freedom and achieve them, that will in fact, open the door for groups that wish to have the right to practice sexual acts we find abhorrent. So that opens the door to the issue to whether minors in fact have the right to consent to relationships with other minors and adults? Pandora's box. As I'm fond of saying. I have no answers but I do admire the problem.

The Wild Hunt : (Pretty Close to) Santeria Panic?

Well sure, Chief Ross is right about that.. The early and mid 1970s were the heyday of Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath. Anyone who lived through it knows it WAS the heyday of heavy metal Satanism. Satan was a popular motif in that genre of music. Definitely dabbling, because I don't think many really took it seriously. It was a great way to piss off your parents and other authority figures. Long live rock and roll! “If you look back in the ’70s … Satanism was the big thing and everybody was dabbling in Satanism."

That's the thing. What the heck defines being a Wiccan? There doesn't seem to be any requirement other than deciding you're one. That tends to make people who are trying to reconstruct or reconstitute worship of the old gods of recognized ethnic groups and define being Pagan as such, tend to roll their eyes and make snide comments under or just slightly over their breath. I'll defend the right of Wiccans to practice what they believe in, I'll even show up gun in hand if it ever comes down to that, but I also reserve the right to snort derisively as well.
