GazetteOnline.com : Hey readers, can you help a brother (me)?

It would be interesting to see how far W and E the influence of the two programs stretch. Find a town midway through, and see what the balance of fans is, go a bit West and a bit East of that point, etc...

There needs to be a sequel to that Bruce Willis movie "Unbreakable" with Koeppel as the lead. His new nickname should be Rolex.

GazetteOnline.com : The Contingency -- Wide receiver

That catch by Sandeman in the photo above was a picture-perfect play. You couldn't ask for a better throw, but that catch was also very clutch. I think Sandeman will definitely get some time in as you said. I believe it was Nordman I saw in the spring scrimmage catching some balls - speaking of stork-like players - he looked good also.

I was just thinking the names you had listed as contributors here for the 08/09 classes there, but yep, just amazing how much D talent in the 06 and 07 classes. Thanks again, Kudos!

Wow, awesome rundown Marc, thanks for taking it to the nth degree....and beyond even. This gives a great perspective on the make up of the starters and how each class contributes in any one year. Only 7 of the 23 players listed in the 2008/2009 classes as poss contributors are Def. Is there anything to make out of that?

Marc, while a Hawkeye fan for 30 yrs, I can't say I follow recruiting too much until they show up to play. However, based on the information I've read (mostly here) on the last couple classes, I'm really impressed with how the recruits look so far. How would you compare the last two classes to this years Jr's and Sr's when they were recruits?

GazetteOnline.com : POLLS -- Big Ten Network's awards: Which Hawkeyes would you pick?

So far the "Which Hawkeye football game would be your game of the year?" question has 44% neither as the top pick. I chose that option for the Iowa/Michigan St football game. While the entirety of the game play may not be the best, the last quarter makes up for it.

GazetteOnline.com : Count me among those glad Tom Izzo is staying at Michigan State

I watched most of the press conference. Now, I don't watch very many so I need to ask, is the banter between the press and coach always like that, because I had to turn it off. It seemed way too much about what he did or didn't explain and some bruised feelings from some reporters at one point.

I wonder if the Big Ten (and Nebraska) are wondering if they shouldn't have accelerated their timeline now that the Big 12 isn't imploding completely. Grades on the decision to jump by the two teams: Nebraska: A-, Colorado: D And Kudos to the remaining teams in the Big 12 for completing their diabolical scheme to never have to get stuck in the snow in CO again.

As an Iowa and Big Ten fan I'm excited to have Nebraska in the mix. I'm debating whether I wish this was the only move. I used to be a ND fan when younger, but my interest has faded lately. If we were only going to add one, maybe ND would be nice, but otherwise, I'm not all that excited about a 14-16 team Big 10.

Until the playing starts, there's not much to judge him by unless it's how he interacts with the current players and the pending recruits. If past indicators hold true here, his previous job and record aren't any indicator of his success at Iowa.

GazetteOnline.com : Iowa athletic department needs to reassess more than just its men's basketball coach

Thanks for this article and all the other in-depth coverage you and the Gazette staff have done on this. I can't help but think of the way the University has treated the Men's BB program the same as an inattentive landlord treats a rental property. You, know, at some point the clothesline instead of a washer, the asbestos ceiling tiles, and the peeling rose petal wallpaper doesn't seem as appealing as it might have 20 years ago. Maybe it can be sold as a nice fixer-upper. Sigh.

GazetteOnline.com : Hlas column: For hope to follow, Hawkeye basketball needs a change

The start of the press conference I'd like to see from Mr Barta... The University of Iowa is committed to the success of our Men's Basketball program. We expect success on and off the court, as well as maintaining a sense of dignity and pride in our program, both internally and for our very loyal fan base. As I have watched the efforts of our players and coaches, I can honestly say that no one in the state of Iowa is more dedicated to once again establishing this program as one of the Big Ten's best as they are. When we made a change in our program three years ago, I believed in Coach Lickliter and I still do today. The future of our basketball program is bright. We graduate one senior this year and one senior in 2011. Over 90% of our scoring and rebounding return next year. Our admiration for this past years team extends further than the numbers. I am proud of the tremendous resilience our student athletes and the coaching staff have shown throughout this year. Their dedication and focus through adversity is to be commended. I look forward to seeing these young men continue to grow in the upcoming years. Also, our incoming recruiting class is one of the most highly regarded in years, again contributing to our excitement for the future of our program. The much overdue work on our practice facilities continues as well, and the athletics department is dedicated to providing an atmosphere that establishes a fair playing field in future recruiting. We owe our fans the opportunity to share in success of this program as we continue to realize the benefits from the changes we began three years ago. This has not been an easy process. Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes. Rebuilding a program as Todd and his players have been asked to do, is simply put - very, very hard work.. We believe they are up to the challenge and we ask for your continued support with these efforts next year and beyond.

GazetteOnline.com : On basketball . . .

As the video says, this all sounds familiar to three years ago. There's no discussion of the great coaching talent beating down the door to come to Iowa. It's "Who can we find that will come here?". I can see Barta now: "Ok, let's see, two darts down, let's throw a third and see where it lands". Iowa fans (including myself) have some unrealistic expectations if we think a new coach will immediately turn this around. Since we seem to be thinking in three years, let's look three years out. Who can definitely say that three years from now a Lickliter coached team, with the current players, new recruits and future recruits, will be worse off than starting over again? Really?

GazetteOnline.com : Tuesday morning college basketball contemplations

If someone can realistically explain how firing Lickliter will lead to Iowa becoming a winning program in the next few years and beyond, I'm listening. It's not like he was the national coach of the year for nothing. Of the player transfers since he's been here, how many are Lickliter recruits and how many, if there are any of those, would have had a notable impact on the team this year? You bring in a new boss to your company who has a significantly different management style, odds are some people just will not mesh with them and you'll have defections (well, in a good job market). I'm not enjoying watching this year any more than anyone else, but I'm looking forward to next year to finally see how a returning group knowing the system, and by all accounts a talented recruiting class, produces throughout the year.
