I have a better idea. How about a 100 foot high by 300 foot wide mural of a modern, clean, gleaming downtown skyline as you drive north into "downtown" on 380? Maybe we can tap into some NEA money for the project. After all, that's what we appear to be best at - feeding from the public trough.

Once again we are 10-15 years behind the times. While other metros around the country are focusing on collaborative efforts to lure jobs to their AREA and reduce infighting that serves no purpose other than to drive up the price, our illustrious mayor is fighting with a town 5 minutes away.

OK, so if I am Mike H. and I clearly know nothing about this recruit I can either a)admit I know nothing, do some research and write a column when I do know something or b)write something stupid like this in a weak attempt to be funny.
GazetteOnline.com : Linn-Mar school board to consider reduction in property tax rate

People are moving into Linn-Mar because they want to pay higher taxes? Now that is rich. Read again: Linn-Mar administrators estimate that, because of changes in determining the taxable value of residential property, the owner of a $150,000 home should still expect to pay slightly more ($5.50) in annual school taxes. Taxes aren't going down in any case. I'd say the working families of this community deserve a break after huge increases the past four years.

GazetteOnline.com : Obama lauds health care bill's passage; see how Iowans voted -- and add your vote

From Mark Steyn: If Barack Obama does nothing else in his term in office, this will make him one of the most consequential presidents in history. It's a huge transformative event in Americans' view of themselves and of the role of government. You can say, oh, well, the polls show most people opposed to it, but, if that mattered, the Dems wouldn't be doing what they're doing. Their bet is that it can't be undone, and that over time, as I've been saying for years now, governmentalized health care not only changes the relationship of the citizen to the state but the very character of the people. As I wrote in NR recently, there's plenty of evidence to support that from Britain, Canada and elsewhere. More prosaically, it's also unaffordable. That's why one of the first things that middle-rank powers abandon once they go down this road is a global military capability. If you take the view that the US is an imperialist aggressor, congratulations: You can cease worrying. But, if you think that America has been the ultimate guarantor of the post-war global order, it's less cheery. Five years from now, just as in Canada and Europe two generations ago, we'll be getting used to announcements of defense cuts to prop up the unsustainable costs of big government at home. And, as the superpower retrenches, America's enemies will be quick to scent opportunity. Longer wait times, fewer doctors, more bureaucracy, massive IRS expansion, explosive debt, the end of the Pax Americana, and global Armageddon. Must try to look on the bright side...

GazetteOnline.com : Steve Alford was asked about Iowa this week, and he answered; Vitale touts Lavin for Hawkeyes job

It doesn't really matter if ESPN thinks DePaul is a better job or not. They will hire the right fit for DePaul and Iowa will hire the right fit (hopefully) for Iowa. That said I think there are two things that would make an analyst say such a thing. One, DePaul is in Chicago. As such they are a perpetual "sleeping giant" given the fan base (Chicago people will jump on the bandwagon if they start winning again) and the tremendous pool to recruit from. Two, DePaul is a basketball school. Iowa can do nothing about either of these two facts so it is really not worth worrying about.

GazetteOnline.com : Cedar Rapids in line for $35 million Events Center

Iowa has grown 2.6% since 2000. The U.S. has grown 8%. I have seen forecasts that over the next 10 years there are only 3 states with projected declines. I believe they are North Dakota, Iowa and West Virginia. Why does Des Moines offer more options? They have better high paying jobs created in the private sector. Specifically the dreaded insurance and banking industries.

Young people are ultimately attracted by the same things as everybody else - opportunities to earn a good living. Opportunities create jobs which young people fill which leads to new businesses springing up to appeal to young people. Having a nice library may be a good idea, but it is not going to convince a single recent college grad to stay here. Lower taxes and remove excessive regulations and you will foster new businesses that create great jobs for our young people. This isn't complicated, but the answer in this state always seems to be to look to government to solve all our problems. I don't get it.
