GazetteOnline.com : Your Iowa-ISU two deeps

I seem to remember from last season a sort of trailing-effect on the depth charts for injured players. In other words, if a player didn't play the previous Saturday because of injury (or was simply held out as a precaution) then they often didn't appear on the top-line of the depth chart the following week. More often than not, this had no affect on what actually occurred the following Saturday. I guess this a long-winded way of saying that I won't believe Prater and Tarp aren't starting until they don't actually do so.

GazetteOnline.com : The Last Call -- Start, schmart

Any word on why Tarp didn't play? Pretty sure I didn't see him out there and Bruce Davis in his stead. I am assuming/hoping it was just precautionary with a lesser opponent, no need to aggravate the hand.

And he'll just piss off a LB from EIU who will go on to be a young head coach who's mission in life is to beat Iowa (and will do so with depressing regularity).

Great article Marc, love these profiles. Was wondering if you ever had the thought/opportunity to do on on Jeremiah Hunter. Hunter is probably the most forgotten/overlooked member of the defense which is unusual for a three-year starter, would be nice to see him get some much deserved press.

What effect, if any, do these departures have on this year's recruiting? Kind of weird that Gray would go through all of camp only to leave at the end. But I guess that's life. Best of luck to both of them in their future endeavors.

GazetteOnline.com : Ferentz long form: On Wegher, Prater and other topics

Well, this may set the expecations bar even higher. I think this is the most positive I have ever heard Ferentz about one of his teams. Not that he's a constant pessimist, just that he usually seems to be pretty even-keel, positive balanced by something that needs work. And there's always something that needs work (as there was here), but KF seems really upbeat about this team. That could be scary for the rest of the league.

Maryland also carries the problem of being a college team(s) in a decidedly professional town/region. During football season, almost no one in the DC/Baltimore corridor gives a whit about Maryland, unless they're having a spectacular 2001-like season. Otherwise, it's all about the Redskins/Ravens.

This game was also important for establishing Ferentz's bona fides as a head coach. I'm sure by this point most of the Iowa faithful had come around, but this was the game that put Ferentz on the national map. I think Bo Schembechler said, as a way of praising Ferentz, something to the effect that Iowa beat up Michigan with its players but you could switch Ferentz to coach Michigan and Michigan would have won by 30.

I think my retinas are scarred from the picture at the top of the page. Apparently, St. Thomas Aquinas subscribes to the Cal/Oregon school of uniform design. Great get for the Hawks, though! Any indication why all the interest in him came from Northern schools? His offer list reads more like someone out of the Midwest/Pennsylvania than Florida.

That, of course, assumes that the reported $$$ figures on the tv deal, a deal that hasn't been actually negotiated let alone signed, are in any way accurate. And it further assumes that in 2-3 years, Texas doesn't come in demanding even a bigger share as its price for staying. Both assumptions are pretty big IFs

GazetteOnline.com : A non-BCS Iowa State?

Yes, but...This ignores the general belief that the MWC will qualify for automatic inclusion in the BCS once the next go-around commences, especially if they add Boise State (as is widely expected) at their upcoming league meetings. The obvious result is some sort of MWC-rump Big XII merger whereby the MWC guarantees automatic-qualifier status by taking on (in this scenario) Kansas, KSU, ISU, and possibly Baylor, while dropping some of their bottom-dweller programs. It could be vicious, mean and ugly, but the MWC seems determined to do whatever it takes to achieve AQ status. The question then becomes which Big XII rump teams it takes, Kansas seems like a no-brainer which means KSU is also in (since they are widely rumored to be a package deal); but Baylor and ISU are question marks, neither really has the stature nor history to merit automatic invitation, and it would probably come down to whether the MWC thought it could get more attractive programs. Or, you know, we just say EFF IT and the Big Ten goes to 60 teams rendering all this moot.

Given that neither has ever won the Pac-10 (hey, they're like the West Coast version of ISU), I'd think that it would be just more of the same for both programs. Seriously though, all this assumes that the current status quo in college football WILL NEVER CHANGE. And that type of logic has clouded a lot of people's perception. When the Big XII was formed, Nebraska was the undisputed top dog, one of the nation's premier powers, and no one in the conference could touch them. Oklahoma, a traditional check on NE's power, was on probation and looked structurally weakened, Texas was coming off the demise of the SWC, a long process that dragged down the Longhorns for a long time, as well as a series of ineffectual coaches. No on remembers, but in the first Big XII championship game, Texas was the UNDERDOG to Nebraska, and their win was a huge upset. Things change in college football, and to expect that Texas will ALWAYS be at the top of the heap, regardless of conference, is to ignore the reality of the situation (not to say that UT will always have an abundance of advantages, just that these can be squandered quite easily, and the slide is quick and dramatic).

GazetteOnline.com : Hlas column: A Big 12 breakup would leave Iowa State heartsick

I'm going to go out on a bit of a limb here and say Texas is getting bashed a bit unfairly. While it is undoubtedly true that Texas' couquettish intrigues are speeding up the implosion of the Big XII, and the Longhorns will, justifiably, end up with a large share of the blame for that league's demise, it is a more than a bit unfair to imply Texas is at fault for moving around so frequently. Texas wasn't the reason for the SWC's demise, that conference was a dead man walking the second SMU got the death penalty. If anything, Texas' main fault was going for the easy fix and forming the Big XII in desperation once Arkansas bolted. But even then, it seems internal Texan politics was the real culprit in the hastily-arranged, poorly-conceived conference. Just seems unfair to lay all this at Texas' feet for their realizing they're carrying a lot of dead weight. I guess the short of it is, PLEASE TEXAS JOIN THE BIG TEN!!!
