I first read "blivit" in Kurt Vonnegut: Palm Sunday, I think? I think he referred to it as an army term.

These books sound great, thanks for the recs! My favorite hardboiled stuff is Jim Thompson: the world he conjures is just amazing (and amoral).

I relish having grown up in suburban Long Island, where shop class was a requirement in JHS (as was home ec!). Girls and boys both learned to use the lathe, belt sander, router, etc., ending with a class project in designing, manufacturing and selling an original product (I came up with a design for a two-tiered plant holder that my mom still uses, 30 years later).

My son is now being put through the meat grinder that is the NYC public education system. While I loathe the idea of moving back to LI, I rue the fact that he's missing out on the education that I got.

Heh. I might've been the one who remastered that Hasil...I used to do a lot of mastering work for Norton Recs. Good times.

Heat is essential to proper popovers (propovers!)! You should let the batter rest for about a 1/2 hour, so it's at room temp. The oven shouldn't just be preheated to 400º: it should get to that temp, and left at it, for a good while, so the whole oven, and not just the air temp, is 400º. And for ideal popovers, use a popover pan!

And this is how they should look, in the best of all possible worlds:

Me and the gf are gonna make your homemade ricotta and bread next week...I can't wait!

I'm with you on this, esp. Ghost Dog. I liked him as Idi Amin, too, but I thought the movie itself was douchey.

You forgot to mention time after corking! My gf took me to Babbo in January for my birthday. The sommelier was terrific: one of the bottles he recommended he described as "spicy" and "peppery." When presented with the tasting, I was kind of disappointed that it wasn't as he described, but still delish. Flash forward ten minutes, and damn if that bottle hadn't changed completely! Spicy and peppery just like he'd said, and an excellent pairing for the gigantic flavors of the food we ordered. That's one of my favorite things about a good wine: how it transforms as you're drinking it. Magical!
