If you plan to NEVER EVER reset your Device again, than thats the safest way. But i think nobody here think of that. What i tried do describe yesterday: I think you have three options: A) Do nothing, hold the firmware. But with the risk, that there maybe comes another update from apple before the next jailbreak is ready. in that case you have to wait another jailbreak longer. B) you update/downgrade, and use the benefits of the situation without waiting C) It fails.. you aren't able to able the jailbreak.. but in that case you only have to wait until the one from pod2g is out (wich is much short than option A) Another option is to wait a few days, hoping that apple not release an new version durning the next days.

Only if any of the changes from 5.1 to 5.1.1 are important for you. Otherwise do nothing and keep 5.1 until a jailbreak comes. And hurry up so save shsh ^^

Try to save shsh/restore to iOS 5.1 before. TinyUmbrella still catch shsh for 5.1.0, maybe they still sign it? Or it is a bug i dont know

Done :) Lost the motivation to go on, thats why i changed to mac, restored again 5.1.1, turned off mobile data, removed the sim card and entered dfu. Than selected 5.0.1 and 5.1.1and some shsh blobs for 5.0.1 i saved someday with tinyumbrella. And it worked. At some point at the beginning he waited to long for my ipad. at the same time "initDevice failed" appears in console. While redsn0w keept searching i klicked on itunes. 1 second later redsn0w found my ipad and moved on. after the next restart i closed itunes because it started to raise messages if i wish to restore the ipad.

imho you can use redsn0w to backup the _version on your phone_, theres the option "fetch" with fetches the shsh's from A4 Devices in pwned DFU. And another one to submit them. Not a bad idea if your currently on 5.0.1, if you're not sure if your're files are valid.. and for a "just in case" its under ~5 min to get them to cydia.

Like i said, i asume the error is raised by something different, itunes always raise error no matter what i do^^ most people know what i mean. i restored 5.1.1 without any error and try again after a reboot. but you are on ios 4? why waiting? based on pod2g's twitter the jailbreak is still some weeks away but theoretical working on 5.1.1.. if apple release a fix before the jailbreak is released and you are still on ios 4.x, you cant use the exploit

If i followed/understand the whole 5.x and shsh thing right (in context of iphone 4) the important point is a signed firmware, not the redirection. (the right blobs a already built in the custom firmware?!) So imho it should point to apple, cause since 5.x they never pointed to cydia if i restored my iphone with a signed fw. But im really not sure here, because iphone 4 use limera1n, dont know i the exploit here is able to use a signed fw or do something else.

you're right, dont know where to get direct links to posts. sorry. but i cant find fails with ipad 2 3g, besides the reported one with Verizon (?! dont know im from europe with gsm) or regular problems with itunes, some one posted an update that after restarting the pc it worked. after buy cigarettes i start upgrade & downgrade with my ipad 2 3g and post results as fare as i got one, but its late in my timezone, dont know if i fell a sleep ;) i habe access to multiple computers in my family (windows, mac, ..) all with itunes, so if there goes something wrong, it maybe work with another itunes version/operating system

sorry for bringing up this again, but just to get this clean. you talk about a weakness in the firmware, according to your post, this weakness must be present in the firmware running on the device (wich means, like your wrote, it can be patched with a new firmware) but some kind of weaknes to downgrade (dont know if this is the same) where mentioned by semaphore before. is there any possibility that there a two version (like 5.1.1 and 5.1) with this weakness and then go into some kind of, lets say, 'loop'? for example if i'm on 5.0.1 while apple released a fixed version but i need to restore my ipad or get 5.1 cause the new jailbreak is ready (or something like that) is it in this case possible to update from 5.0.1 to 5.1/5.1.1 (with shsh a redsn0w (assuming the process is equal to downgrading?!?)) and after that later downgrade again. and much later update, and downgraid again and again? (sorry if i missed something and this idea is crap)

ipad 3g or ipad 2 3g? in case of ipad 2 3g, i could test (and report) it with mine if the problems arent so brutal. can you evantually post the direct links to some of them with details (if you now where they are), i dont find them while flying over the pages. (ipad 3g is a4 and limera1n, so i guess ipad 2?)

Just a big thank you for the new feature (wich ment a lot of work (and even more hours of research, testing, coding, ...) for you) and especially provide them in this kind of quality. Most of the people don't know what it means to provide a tool like redsn0w wich (in addition to the jailbreak stuff) works this stable for a very large community (naturally composed of people without a special technical background about ios internals) In addition working on two platforms in composition with Apple Stuff like iTunes/Bonjour/... Every one knows that iTunes/Bonjour, even without modification, isn't always working correct. So again thanks for the awesome work! (repeated 34234^10 times)
