Here is a larger view of Figure 2: http://www.nature.com/nclimate/journal/vaop/ncurr... Figure 2-a is essentially further validation of the conventional argument that the global climate was in a cooling phase, resulting, in part, from orbital forcing. If you look from 1876-present on the graph, you will see that the cooling trend came to an end (the dashed red line). The blue lines are showing the departure from the average JJA (June, July, August) temperatures for the period 1951-1980. This appears to be further confirmation of the "hockey stick" graph. http://www.middlebury.edu/media/view/112130/origi... Figure 2-b is relating the correlation between MXD (maximum latewood density) chronology and JJA temperatures for the period 1876-2006.

From your source: "These findings, together with the missing orbital signature in published dendrochronological records, suggest that large-scale near-surface air-temperature reconstructions9, 10, 11, 12, 13 relying on tree-ring data may underestimate pre-instrumental temperatures including warmth during Medieval and Roman times." These recent findings are only significant for pre-industrial times, namely during the Holocene epoch up until the industrial revolution. The article emphasizes the effects of anthropogenic climate change in it's reconstructions.

I think you mixed up your analogy. In this case, it would be like you going to their country and being hassled for continuing to speak English. Asians in the US aren't expecting other Americans to speak their languages.

"If that were the case, I would stll be speaking German." If what were the case? That freedom of speech protects speech of any language? "We all came to this country for the freedom, but English is the common language of this land. If it werent, none of us would be able to communicate with each other." I understand your point and agree. I think we only differ on our ideas on how to approach the fact that not all immigrants are going to speak English fluently. I have a problem with people who are hostile toward others just because they speak a different language. "I do mind my own business. Obviosly, you were not born here, or you were born here, but your parents are un-documented (illegal). If you dont want to learn OUR LANGUAGE.....go back to your native country and speak your language all you want.." Ha! I'm probably just as waspy as you are. The most recent immigration to this country by one of my ancestors was in the late 1800's. Mostly from Germany as well!

If that is something that you actually do, you are incredibly rude. The same laws that give you the right to speak the language you wish to speak in public also protect others who speak other languages. It is not freedom of English speech. If people are minding their own business and speaking a non-English language, who are you to tell them to speak English? If you can't be friendly to others in public than do us all a favor and mind your own business.

I think it is irresponsible when some people suggest that an isolated extreme weather (I cannot stress the word weather enough) event is likely to be a result of climate change. That said, there is evidence that climate change could increase the frequency and intensity of weather events but I think it is impossible to know if a particular event is related to climate change. Climate trends, on the other hand, certainly can be suggested to be a result of climate change.

I'm just going to quote myself from something I posted on here about a week ago: The recent rise in global temperatures has been rapid where the transition from a glacial period to an interglacial period is very slow (several thousand years). Ice ages are thought to be the result of a phenomenon called orbital forcing which is essentially gradual shifts in the tilt of the earth's axis and small changes in how it rotates around the sun. All of this takes tens of thousands of years which would basically eliminate the possibility of the rapid climate change we are currently experiencing having anything to do with a glacial age.

Not to mention the millions of dollars that will be saved every year as Ediz Hook regains it's primary source of sediment. For those that don't know, Ediz Hook is a spit in Port Angeles that supports a Coast Guard station and a paper mill that is important to the local economy. Over the last 80 years or so we have had to replenish the spit by artificial means, costing the state hundreds of millions of dollars.
