I wish, if people wanted to use my blog enough to pay me for guest post placement, they'd also pay better writers to do their shilling for them. :) That, or offer more than $35 a YEAR to put crap on my blog - I mean, that doesn't even cover my hosting fees. The truth, though, is that I accept very few guest posts - most of them are from people I know well and like, and trust to write sincerely, if imperfectly. :) I do agree with you that it's a good way to expand your blog's readership, as you bring in your guest bloggers' readers each time you accept guest posting (that assumes you're accepting only posts from bloggers with a following of any size - like, say, three - I mean seriously, I don't expect them to have a huge fan base, but I do like guest bloggers to promote their posts and stick around and engage with my readers, too). Honestly, I got dragged into the Marketing part kicking and screaming - but now it's FUN. (Oh, God, I've joined the Dark Side! LOL) Seriously, you can ask my publisher - I still remember standing in the kitchen open-mouthed, gasping, asking her NOT to publish my first book, when I realized that the hard part wasn't writing the book, but marketing it, and that I had to do a lot of that - she wasn't going to do it ALL for me. Well, it's easier now, kind of fun. Still challenging - and maybe that's the key to why I like it at all. Content is easy for me; SEO, I mostly ignore. ;) Okay, not really, but I think content FIRST, not SEO. And planning? You're right - essential. But so is a little playfulness and spontaneity (another word I can't spell right the first time, to save my life). That doesn't seem all that "social" to me, really. Social is where humans talk to humans, and spread links by hand and "word of mouth." I think sometimes we get the terms confused. You can throw all sorts of links AT people, but they'll quickly learn to tune that out. (Still works - see Google AdSense for a good example - I mean, could you tell me what was advertised via AdSense on the last two websites that had it, including GMail? But if you're in the market for something and it displays at the right time, you're more likely to see it AND click it. That's NOT quite "social," though, in my opinion.) All of this is so true - we've seen the value of commenting over the last few months, you and I, haven't we? Blogging in a vacuum isn't much fun, and no blogger can succeed alone.
