GazetteOnline.com : Streetscape plans incorporate Marion's past

Many of the brick streets around central Marion are horribly bumpy. One of the worst is on 10th Street near the library. I would not advocate additional brick streets if they can't be better maintained than those already present.

GazetteOnline.com : Twenty years ago today (March 16), UNI had its best basketball day ever

Mike, I was a 20 year-old writer for the UNI newspaper at the time. You knew the team had "made it" when Dick Vitale had nicknames for the players. It's worth pointing out that earlier that year about 20,000 UNI and Iowa fans filled the Dome to watch the Panthers beat the Hawks for the first time in three generations. Talk about energy in an arena ... I'm sure you remember. At that time it was a tradition that the UNI dining centers served steak and shrimp the day after a Panther team took down the Hawks or Clones. There weren't many of those dinners served, but when they were, it was sweet.

GazetteOnline.com : Give me one name and one name only for your choice as the next Iowa men's basketball coach

Mark Few at Gonzaga. Zags have been to many a tourney of late. Time for Few to take his ball to a bigger gym.

GazetteOnline.com : Who are the Hawkeyes' top five athlete icons of all-time?

Easier for me to think of this in terms of representing the body of work of UI athletics. So: 1 spot for wrestling, 1 for men's BB, 1 for womens BB, and 2 for football (might argue for "other sports" with the last pick but UI is, after all, a FB school) How about: Kinnick Long Lester Brands (coach and 3-time NCAA champ) Michelle Edwards

GazetteOnline.com : Video: Iowa Coach Todd Lickliter talks about criticism facing his son

What's delusional in this article? Sounds to me like coach is not playing his son because he wants to, but because there are few choices. Basically admits that his son is overmatched against competition. If Iowa still had greyshirts like they did for Tom Davis, Lickliter would be one. Those greyshirts rarely played real minutes in a close game, and I don't think Lik's son would be either under normal circumstances.

GazetteOnline.com : If you'd told me these things on Dec. 31, 1999 ...

Prior to 1999 UNI men's basketball had one previous trip (I believe) to the NCAA tourney. Ten years later, they have been to several tourneys and (arguably) have the most established, successful program among the D1s in Iowa. Who'd have thunk it? I'd post about UNI football too, except the program has been at a high level for more than 10 years.

GazetteOnline.com : Kernels, Angels continue love affair (PDC) thru 2012

Never understood why the CR management has not preferred to hook up with a MLB franchise in the Midwest. Always fun to catch a major leaguer in town during rehab -- we miss out on the Angels players doing so. Also would seem to fuel more interest in following the players up through the ranks.

GazetteOnline.com : Tuesday Reading Room - New Las Vegas poll has Georgia Tech ranked 8th, Iowa 22nd

USA Today has a graphic showing which coaches voted Iowa where in the final standings. Harbaugh and the guy at Washington State don't think much of Iowa. Noticed Patterson of TCU also skewed low. Patterson's low vote wouldn't have hurt his team, would it?

GazetteOnline.com : Putting a percentage on the bowl

A good basketball program is good for the football program. You have to think that a recruit coming to Iowa City in Dec/Jan to a 15,500 Carver Hawkeye and hearing fans scream wildly when Ferentz is announced over the intercom, is much more impressive than 500 students and 4,000 adults sparcely filling the gym.

GazetteOnline.com : Tuesday BCS update

Iowa's destiny will be "known" by 2:01 p.m. Sunday. If Iowa is selected by the Cap One, there you go. If PSU is named, Iowa is bound for either the Fiesta or Orange (speculation seems to point more to Tempe than Miami). No way both Iowa and Penn State get overlooked in the BCS. I'm surprised that the Cap One will take the liberty to make their announcement ahead of the BCS -- I guess no one can tell them otherwise, but its not very cooperative.

GazetteOnline.com : Monday Hawkeyes Reading Room - Could a 10-2 Iowa go to a BCS bowl?

I don't watch enough ESPN to have a good feel for where Iowa should be slotted nationally. I do know that watching Iowa is like being on a rollercoaster that makes you sick and smile all at the same time. It is hard to believe that Iowa is among the top 10 teams and should be in a game that theoretically is reserved for the best five match-ups in the country. Wish it were true, but ...

GazetteOnline.com : Power restored in NE Cedar Rapids, Marion

Last year Alliant sent a letter to Marion customers apologizing for the number of power outages we experience -- something about the grid being overextended and out of date. A little rain, wind, ice or snow often knocks us out. Frustrating.

GazetteOnline.com : Iowa fans: Are your Hawkeyes respected nationally?

Iowa is getting a little too much respect, perhaps. Yes, they are winning, and that is tremendous. At some point Iowa's offense is going to need to score 30 points in Big Ten play without the defense forcing 5 turnovers. This is an exciting (i.e. nailbiting) team to watch. Any game left on the schedule can be won ... or lost.
