HI Nicolae,

great point.=C2=A0 This document will not be the only source of information about reimbursement, but is an overview of the event for everyone who will be involved.=C2=A0 I agree that the information shoul= d align with the reimbursement policy.=C2=A0

In the 'how to participate as a PhD student' section, I added the line that students do not have to submit a work in progress to participate in the incubator, but it is strongly recommended.=C2=A0 If this should be moved to another place in the document, we can do that.=C2=A0

Sareh has often made the point that usually if transportation and accommodation are covered (which is itself rare), then students should be expected to present work of some kind.=C2=A0 This is an expensive event for us to run.=C2=A0 I would like as many PhDs to prese= nt their work as possible, rather than just come and talk about other people's work.

I recommend that reimbursement policy require online participation in advance of the annual conference, and participating in PhD and Annual Conference program events on Wednesday to Friday.=C2=A0 This is = in line with what we have done before.=C2=A0 This will be in the reimbursement policy document for PhDs.=C2=A0

This would make the events on Saturday optional.=C2=A0 Currently these are the AGM, the Research Conversations, and the PhD Administrative Meeting.=C2=A0 Saturday was the only reasonable time to include these without interfering with the informal discussion time that is so valuable during the conference, for networking.=C2=A0

What do people think about this?=C2=A0 H

=C2=A0

CBERN 2012: Annual Conference Program : Annual Conference Program - Canadian Business Ethics Resear...

Hi Sareh, I'm writing this in response to your comments in the word document. Based on the mandate of CBERN to break down knowledge silos and generate cross-sectoral discussion, from my perspective it is better to open the doors to the non-faculty advisors, and make exceptions in cases where we can't find or it is not going to be beneficial to have non-faculty advisors involved for a particular session in the incubator. I think that non-faculty advisors are often highly educated in the field. For example, with Bill Woof's paper which was possibly the most theoretical, our non-faculty advisor had a law degrees from Princeton and Harvard. I don't think we will lose the academic/research edge off our PhD meetings due to the format of this incubator. We had excellent feedback on the surveys regarding the relevance of the sessions for developing ideas, and I don't think any of the sessions evidenced a dumbing down of the work due to the requirement that people present to a mixed audience. The smaller pods of themed works in progress in the incubator will deepen the discussion I think. We can highlight to the non-faculty advisors that some of the work will be working on theory. And we will definitely make sure that students will be able to take advantage of academic advice. It might be an idea to facilitate introductions of students to faculty throughout the event to foster the sorts of mentorship opportunities that you have developed independently over the years for example. These would be the sort of long-lasting relationship building opportunities that can be fostered both within and outside the incubator. So we can supplement it to maximize the opportunities. We could match people for meals for example. I'll add a checkbox to the registration form to help identify people. This will help particularly in the case of academics who cannot participate in the Friday afternoon session, but would like to support the thesis work of PhDs.

Right now, the AGM will likely be for 45 minutes on Saturday morning. I wanted to make sure that it was not in conflict with the phd incubator on Friday. If it is during the AGM, there is a 'silo' effect on the graduate students that I would like to avoid. Right now the proposal is to have the PhD organizing meeting after lunch on Saturday, and the AGM and Research Conversations on Saturday morning.

This is a great suggestion Sareh. Can you explain the Academy of Management PhD workshop icebreaker in a bit more detail? How long does it take? If people like the idea, we can include it in the two page event description document and hold it in advance of the incubator on Friday. We may have our highest non-faculty participation at this time, and so to put them together would make sense.

Hi Bill, one thing that we are working on is a revised PhD microsite that would have an alumni group and a current PhD group. Part of the difficulty with what you outline here is that we do not have the resources to keep track of all students rolling through their programs, and not everyone finishes on a predictable timeline. However if we make something available for people to self-organize based on interests, this would cover the classifications you describe, plus others. Work in progress. We will work with the committee on this over the summer.

I think that sending out an invite at ASAC would be great. This would mean that we would have to have the plan for the meeting set before ASAC, which is June 9-15th in St. John's, NF. http://www.asac.ca/ One complication is that there may be a CURI day-long symposium on the Sunday before UNPRI PhD Day on October 1. This would push the Fall research meeting back by one day, or remove the Sunday morning sessions. This would probably be okay if we did PhD meeting on Friday and Saturday only, with the option for people to stay for CURI and then the PhD Day. Long weekend, but productive. Thoughts?
I think these are two great areas to incorporate into online program. It would be good to do one on research that people have workshopped at past research meetings hosted by the PhD cluster and see what has happened with that. It might be a bit of a motivator. H

We could do a few sessions on organizations/associations like these. What I will do is see what is possible with Ameila and Maureen for ASAC and UNPRME.
Hi there, I've done this revision. Note that it includes "how to participate" for advisors and for the industry-based research panel. What do people think of this? Hilary #2 Draft Outline: PhD Annual Conference Research Meeting and Incubator 2012 The PhD Cluster will host a PhD Research Meeting and Incubator during the CBERN Annual Conference, on Friday afternoon, May 11th, 2012. The event will take place in The Alberta Room at the Hotel Alma, on the University of Calgary campus. The purpose of the workshop is to: •Give an overview of the CBERN PhD Cluster objectives (10 minutes) •Host an incubator involving faculty and non-faculty advisors to support students as they develop work into publishable papers in the area of business ethics (1.5 hours, 30 minute plenary) •Share and discuss current trends in industry-based research on business ethics topics and issues in Canada (1 hour, 30 minute plenary) The workshop will draw on the expertise of Annual Conference participants and the local Calgary community across academic, business, NGO and government sectors. Research Incubator The research incubator will match PhDs with peers, faculty advisors, and non-faculty advisors in their area during a focused group discussion of the student’s work. During the incubator, students working on similar themes and topics will be organized into pods with faculty and non-faculty advisors, and each student’s work in progress discussed in turn. Research works in progress will be posted in advance of the event in a secure online workspace, open to PhD participants, faculty and non-faculty advisors. •Student participants are expected to read and comment on the work of their peers in advance of the meeting. This is a condition of expense reimbursement for attending the Annual Conference. •Faculty will read the works in progress submitted and provide oral and written feedback to help students develop their paper or idea. •Non faculty advisors will read the abstracts and have the option to read the works in progress in advance of the research meeting, and will participate in the discussion, with the option of providing written feedback. A. How to Participate in the Research Incubator as a PhD Student Please let us know if you intend to attend the Annual Conference and Research Workshop in Calgary, and send in an abstract of the work in progress you would like to discuss. Once we receive this information, the PhD Cluster Steering Committee and CBERN staff will be in a position to find faculty and non-faculty advisors to help you develop your idea. The deadline for expressions of interest is April 7th, 2012. The deadline for submitting your work in progress to the online workspace is April 18th, 2012. Material must not exceed 15 double-spaced pages. Michael Windle, CBERN’s Online Program Coordinator, will connect with you regarding your login and instructions on uploading your materials and guidelines for commenting. Notes will be taken by rapporteurs and posted to the workspace after the meeting for your use in improving your paper, and continuing the discussion. B. How to Participate in the Research Incubator as an Advisor Please let us know if you would like to participate as a faculty or non-faculty advisor for the Research Meeting and Incubator, including a brief overview of the experience you would bring and key areas of interest. Once we receive this information, the PhD Cluster Steering Committee and CBERN staff will be in a position to match you with a small group of students to work with during the event. The deadline for expressions of interest is April 7th, 2012. C. How to Participate as a Business Sector Panelist We are seeking four participants from the business sector to share and discuss current trends in industry-based research on business ethics topics and issues in Canada. Please let us know if you are interested in joining the panel, including a brief overview of the experience you would bring and key areas of research you would like to discuss. The deadline for expressions of interest is April 21th, 2012. The Incubator event is modeled on an afternoon research workshop and incubator held by The Centre of Excellence in Responsible Business at the Schulich School of Business on Monday, 12th December, 2011. The PhD Cluster thanks Andy Crane and Dirk Matten, Co-Directors of the Centre, for assisting in developing the format of this event.

Last year in Halifax we were going to host a networking breakfast to connect PhDs with those at the conference interested in graduate students. Based on the uptake at the PhD Winter Research Meeting, there is appetite for this in the industry/NGO sector. The Ethics Practitioners Association of Canada (EPAC) is interested in helping out with this. Also Sheldon Chumir would be big on this I think. They are local.

Each year, we include sessions that focus on professional development for the PhD cluster members. In 2010 these included 6 rapidfire afternoon sessions with academics, practitioners, consultants, Yolanda Banks from EDC and Mitacs. They were in the afternoon after a full day of program and participation dropped off by the end. In 2011 these included 3 extended roundtable afternoon discussions with Jeff Frooman (using a paper to develop curriculum), Tessa Hebb (building global networks based on research) and Paul Wilkinson (building a consultancy business based on research and working with first nations communities). Participation was high, but we had a small group in Halifax. To throw a few things out there: Maureen Kilgour is again interested in doing a session on UN Principles for Responsible Management. I've had interest from Amelia Clark to connect with the PhD cluster on ASAC and haven't been able to make it happen yet so this may be an opportunity (or for a webinar). I just got back from the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) conference and they are interested in connecting with more young scholars, so we could do an organizing session on this (or maybe during the Saturday planning sessions).

Saturday Research Conversations For the past 2 years we have hosted informal sessions for people to plan projects or talk about topics of interest on the Saturday morning following the conference. In 2010, we had a board in the registration area and people added post-it note topics for roundtable discussions, and then we grouped them and people self-organized on the Saturday morning. We had a good turnout and some good projects came out of it. In 2011, we just invited people to show up. This was less productive and we had fewer people. If the PhD cluster wanted to champion this session, particularly using the dialogue methods that Mike Cody has mentioned, this would be great.

Friday Incubator idea: Here is the draft outline I circulated by email. Draft Outline: PhD Annual Conference Research Meeting and Incubator 2012 The PhD Cluster will host a PhD Research Meeting and Incubator during the CBERN Annual Conference, on Friday afternoon, May 11th, 2012. The event will take place in The Alberta Room at the Hotel Alma, on the University of Calgary campus. The purpose of the workshop is to: •Hear about some of the research previously presented at PhD Research Meetings in 2011 and 2012, and to see how it has developed (30 minutes) •Host an incubator involving faculty and non-faculty advisors to support students as they develop work into publishable papers in the area of business ethics (1.5 hours, 30 minute plenary) •Share and discuss current trends in industry-based research on business ethics topics and issues in Canada (1 hour, 30 minute plenary) The workshop will draw on the expertise of Annual Conference participants and the local Calgary community across academic, business, NGO and government sectors.
