Science is what it is defined to be. If we change the definition of science to include things that are not currently considered science then we will need a new word for what we currently consider science. There is a set of principles and practices that seems to have value. We call them science. But it is the principles that have value not the word science itself. ID and much of the populace attach value to the word rather than the practice. Stein and his ilk seek authority by association with the word rather than the practice. Spin and marketing and exploitation.

Science kills people in the same way anaesthetics kill people. Sometimes they can both be incorrectly used; knowingly or otherwise.

Yep. That's a good point. But if we stomp on these 'rebuttals' at this point it doesn't allow us to rebut the rebuttals in any meaningful way. Nobody is going to notice if these Christian ads don't run. But if they do run then we have an established precedent that allows us to be a little more forthright than "There's _probably_ no God" in the future. It seems to me that the further the boundaries of what the ASA will tolerate are pushed, the greater our chance of success. But I'm open to being convinced otherwise. I'll confess, I'm also in two minds as to the best approach here.

Let these ads run. We don't have the right to not be offended. But just imagine the fun we can have if they DO run. We have nothing to be afraid of here. In an open dialog we cannot fail to win. You know stuff like quotes from Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Exodus etc. And stuff like "The fool hath said in his heart that crackers turn into Jesus chunks." We'll have a field day if this actually results in the taboos around religious debate being lifted. It's time to see the big picture. Let's not get offended, let's get even.

Sheesh! And we claim the theists are delusional! You just set the cause back twenty years.

Well I don't like it THAT much. Besides, there's some paint here that looks like it might be about to start drying. Better keep an eye on that. Could get nasty.

Excellent idea! Any chance you could put something together?

Practice, practice, practice ;) Either that or just wing it. In my experience they're usually so ill prepared and shocked at being debated that it's a complete cake walk.

Last lot I had were two elderly JW ladies telling me how the world was in such a terrible state. 'All this war and violence' Nope. Never been less of either in the entire history of the world. 'AIDS and cancer'. Nope. Life expectancy has never been higher and diseases so well controlled. 'Third world poverty' Nope. Never been richer or safer or healthier. Very thin stuff indeed. I asked them to pick any historical period in which they would rather live. Then I let them go. The drooling was beginning to soil the carpet.

Nice ladies. Just suffering from a case of weapons-grade detatchment from reality.
