The reason is that whites have been deemed to be uniquely evil. This would not be much of a problem if it were confined merely to the Left. It becomes a major problem insofar as the majority of Conservatives and Centrists throughout West have succumbed to this, through PC MC. Without their enablement, it would not enjoy the traction and influence it does enjoy.

Racism is very much alive and well today -- not as a science, and only rarely in one of its traditional forms of an ideology purveyed by various white groups. It is now alive and well as an ideology of the Left and of Muslim Apologists, and most of its precepts have also filtered down into the general mainstream via the amorphous yet powerful sociopolitical process called PC MC. Thus, the comment of maxpublius above -- "Preserving a culture--it's people, ideas, and land--is not racism. " Unfortunately, according to the dictates of PC MC, preserving a culture -- its people, ideas, and land -- is racism when white people do it, but it is not racism when non-whites do it. That's the overwhelming political reality in which we live today. And it is directly enabling the Islamic Jihad in the West. It would not be enabling Islamic Jihad in the West if most Muslims were not "ethnic". If most Muslims were white, this would not be an issue. The PC MC West would have shut their ideology down in a heartbeat by now. That's the blunt but unavoidable fact of the matter. There is, however, the matter of the Two-Step maneuver Bassiouini has to fall back on (the same Two-Step which Leftists also use), which Spencer didn't address: "My position on apostasy has been expressed as early as 1983, namely that at the time of the Prophet it was not considered as only changing one’s mind but that it was the equivalent of joining the enemy and thus constituting high treason." I.e. -- Step One: First the apologist claims there is nothing there -- no death penalty for apostasy then when people call him on it with the facts, he moves to Step Two: Oh, there is something there, but it's something else -- why, it's not apostasy, it's "high treason"! This is essentially the same Two-Step maneuver used in other similar circumstances when Islamic terrorism -- which is at first denied to exist -- is then admitted to exist when the facts can no longer be denied, but is then magically transformed into "restive" "resistance movements" against "oppression" and "long-standing grievances" in a "context of a cycle of violence" caused by a breakdown in the sociopolitical order due to fallout from Western Colonialism "interfering" in "the region". Bassiouni's Two-Step tap-dance can be easily dispensed with: the modern world no longer accepts a concept of "high treason" based upon religion and upon religious choices. Now, if only the modern world would step up to the plate and actually enforce what it believes in, we might have on our hands something actually quite relevant, rational and humane to define (and punish: "Mr. Bassiouini, please get your papers and luggage in order...") as high treason...

That "Distinguished" is apparently his official title at DePaul University -- but notice how he used that word to describe other Muslim scholars he claims have been criticizing the 4 schools -- "I and a number of other distinguished Muslim scholars have long criticized the views of the four traditional Sunni schools. " In that quote, he's using the word in its unofficial sense, which comes off smelling silly and juvenile.

Another interesting thing that can be gleaned, aside from the glaring logical error Spencer caught, in Professor Bassiouni's attempted counter-argument: When he writes that -- "I and a number of other distinguished Muslim scholars have long criticized the views of the four traditional Sunni schools" -- he is inadvertently revealing that those four schools are not in fact a dead letter today, but elicit, and require, the conscientious opposition of scholars like him. Unless, of course, he means that he and other scholars have "long criticized" the views of the four schools for purely antiquarian reasons -- sort of like many Western scholars at various universities united in a concerted and long-term effort to criticize the Domesday Book of William the Conqueror or the Code of Hammurabai, purely for reasons of historical interest in dusty old laws that have nothing at all to do with current society today. Yeah right, and I'm the uncle of apes and swine. Another indication of the current relevance of those four schools -- Professor Bassiouni himself said that he felt obligated to submit a written document to the Court in Kabul in the Abdul Rahman apostasy case. Can anyone imagine any Christian scholar today feeling the need to weigh in on a court case involving laws from the early middle ages being enacted in any Western country on the planet ? Of course not. This only is a problem when we deal with Muslim societies. As long as "distinguished" Muslims like Professor Bassiouni continue to bristle with their prickly pique everytime reasonable criticisms are raised about the outrageous conduct of Muslims all over the globe, we will -- at the very least -- remain suspicious of their motives.

Wow -- this thread now has over 970 comments! And it's safe to say that over 90% of them are irrelevant to the article. Why is InstantDebacle getting even worse!? It seems strange and possibly fishy that it is spiralling out of control so monumentally -- particularly after Spencer announced he is ditching it. nakal, you have a lot to learn about Islam. The Koran is only one half of what is important to Muslims. Muslims -- 85% of the world's 1.3 billion -- also follow the Sunna in addition to the Koran. The other 15%, the Shia, have their own version of the Sunna (which includes a great deal of what Sunnis use, including the Sahih Ahadith).

Two days ago, August 11, Spencer finally took time out of his busy schedule to tell us that he is aware of the InstantDebacle problem and that he is going to change the comments system "soon". This belated notice came to us after a good month of inreasingly escalating problems with InstantDebate. Perhaps Spencer doesn't appreciate the nature of Jihad Watch comments -- how it functions as a thriving community of people concerned about the problem of Islam; how furthermore this community helps to make this site Jihad Watch a dynamic interactive site and not merely a boring newsfeed; and finally how this community helps his book sales. The community dimension of JW comments has effectively become crippled. It is now in ruins because of IntenseDebacle. Spencer should treat this as an emergency, stop everything else, suspend Jihad Watch immediately while he switches over to a new system -- NOW. All here in favor say "aye".
