If Mike Sundall is buddies with John Smith, I can promise that this truly stupid idea gets approved. This terrible idea fails the eyeball test as badly as the True North libary swap fails the smell test and it all smells like a sweaty trucker on 16th Ave,

GazetteOnline.com : It's good to be Steve Alford

Cedar Rapids (returned) native here. I lived in Albuquerque for many years and attended UNM. Albuquerque and Alford are a perfect fit for each other. That town is COMPLETELY bonkers for Lobo basketball and Coach Alford is right in the spotlight, exactly where his ego requires him to be. That being said, The Pit is the best NCAA basketball experience on the planet. I've been to the majority of Big 10 and ACC arenas over the years and NOBODY gets loud like the fans at UNM. I did get tremendous satisfaction/grief when I wore my Iowa BB shirt to a game at The Pit last year! :-)

GazetteOnline.com : After death, life still something to celebrate

You couldn't find 2 nicer families in town and Lisa and Doug will be sorely missed. This was evidenced by the HUNDREDS of people at the viewing last night (and at Doug's services) and the grace exhibited by John, his kids and Lisa's family who took time to chat with everyone there with a smile on their faces despite their heavy hearts. These families will be fine due to their strength of character. Lisa has set a tremendous example on how to handle adversity and her family has obviously learned from it. God bless both families and Lisa.

Taxes up, utilies up. Economic growth dyiiiing. I'm sure that DBQ has seen their resurgence the last decade or so fueled by higher taxes and more government intervention. Watching my home town become a real P.O.S. to live in. Sjould have stayed away.

Except for this: "The ability of the non-profit Downtown District to purchase the property was aided by an I-Jobs grant the City of Cedar Rapids received FROM THE STATE" (caps added for emphasis)." Good use of taxpayer $$ as far as I'm concerned. That property needs to be cleaned up and made more viable for future development soon. My question is are the current owners of the site not accountable to maintain it?

Also, they plan for "strategic redevelopment" all of which is fine with me. If the NPO wants to buy it, clean it up and have it redeveloped by a private company, I'm all for it. That piece of property needs some attention as it is an eyesore. It also needs to be developed and back on the tax rolls asap.

Sinclair is terrible, Mediacom is slightly worse. This is a case of douchebag on douchebag crime and should only be encouraged.
KCRG : Prosecutors File Motion to Drop Immigration Charges Against Rubashkin | KCRG-TV9 | Cedar Rapids, Iow

No point in prosecuting him further. The guy will most likely die in prison and is financially ruined. No point in spending further government money for revenge. Rubashkin is as punished as he's gonna get. Kudos to the feds for showing a bit of both fiscal and judicial restraint. I'm sure if he'd not been convictedf on the previous charges this trial would go full steam ahead. This seems like a good example of effective charging and prosecution.

Gee, KCRG, could you have titled the article in a more inflammatory way? No bias there! Daveym is right - his time in prison will not be appreciably increased, and it will simply cost time and money and accomplish little. It's a shame that the immigration charges (which of course garnered far more media attention) are the ones to be tossed, but either way they got their man. Be happy with that. A separate trial on the immigration charges will serve little more than to further pad the pockets of his attorneys.
