Daily Camera.com: : Boulder police respond to report of pedestrian hit by car - Boulder Daily Camera

I live in an apartment complex that overlooks this crosswalk. Every morning as I'm eating breakfast, I look out my window and watch to see how long it takes for people to cross Canyon ( I also check out the flatirons). Cars will usually not stop when the person is just entering the crosswalk, at which point they need to wait until no cars are coming at all. Once they make it half-way across, the cars from the opposing side usually slow and come to a halt. I find this is the case when I need to cross the street on my way to campus or to work. I've lived here a year and half and am very surprised this is the first serious accident to occur. Why do all other crosswalks have blinking lights but not this one? Especially in a 35 MPH zone with two lanes. Most cars, when confronted with the blinking lights, make a serious effort to come to a stop. I think the inconsistency of not having lights in this case makes drivers think they're not obligated to stop. Perhaps it's the case that they just stopped on Folsom going West, or at another blinking crosswalk going East, and are jaded with having to stop at so many places that the lack of blinking lights is not taken seriously. In this specific incident, it's probably a combination of the driver's lack of attention, the pedestrian's swift ambition to cross the street, and the time of day. I think this could have been prevented with the installation of blinking lights. Those people that think that there are too many crosswalks in Boulder should go through the proper channels in getting some removed. Good luck. Meanwhile all the proper measures should be implemented to ensure pedestrians cross the street safely.
